BBQ Returns to Bull Run ES this Thursday

Bull Run is excited for the return of FCPS Rotational BBQ. Mark your calendar for Thursday, October 11 as traditional BBQ fare will be served including hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and sausage links. We had a great time last year and look forward to the possibility of cooler weather this go around. As always, we would love for our families to join us for lunch! See you under the tents!

Charger Dash Coming

Families! This year’s main fundraiser is the Charger Dash! It’s a two-week program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on October 29. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we’ll celebrate at the Charger Dash on November 9. With our big goal of raising $24,000 for books and other resources to enhance our literacy program, we asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Charger Dash and make it easier, more profitable, and more fun.

Students will also experience an amazing character theme, MINDSPARK MYSTERY LAB! Boosterthon’s most exciting theme yet combines S.T.E.A.M skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) with character-building. While they're teaming up with the MindSpark Kids to solve mysteries, our students will learn five 21st-century character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world.

Donations will go toward books and other resources to enhance our literacy program and to the entire two-week experience. So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer at the Charger Dash!

This will be a POSITIVELY EPIC experience for our entire community!

Communication about CrisisText

Please be aware that centrally generated messages, via phone and e-mail, will go to parents of middle and high school students on October 12, 2018, reminding them of the availability of the Crisis Textline. This message will also alert the parents that students will receive a similar message on October 19, 2018, via FCPS 24/7 e-mail accounts.

Parents will be provided with an option to request that their child not receive the October 19, 2018, message.  Students whose parents have chosen to opt them out of counseling lessons will not receive the Crisis Text message.

Digital Citizenship Week Is Coming Soon

Common Sense Media offers information on internet safety, security and healthy habits to families. They have identified 5 easy tips to keep your kids safe online.

  1. Discuss personal vs. private information - What’s ok to share and what isn’t?
  2. Use privacy settings - Every time your child downloads an app, look through the settings to know what information it may be accessing and sharing.
  3. Avoid location tracking - Some apps can track your child’s location. Turn this off if possible.
  4. Power up passwords - Help your child come up with a more complex password that includes numbers and symbols.
  5. Skip quizzes - Help kids identify “clickbait” that may look fun or interesting, but will ask for their information. Quizzes or special offers that pop up on websites may also contain viruses if clicked on.

Next week is Digital Citizenship Week! This year’s theme is Building a Culture of Shared Responsibility. Each day, a message will be sent out based on the theme for the day. The daily themes are:

Monday:  Shared Responsibility

Tuesday: Healthy Habits

Wednesday: Using Media to Build Character

Thursday: Supporting Student Thinking

Friday: Handling Haters, Trolls and Cyberbullies

Positivity Project: Other People Matter - Identifying Good in Others

    positivity

The Positivity Project added seven weeks of OPM2 to provide us the opportunity to regularly remind students and staff that relationships are the key driver in our life satisfaction.

Identifying and appreciating the good in others isn’t always what comes naturally. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment.

To see the good in others, we must first slow down and take the time to pay attention. Look for the intentions behind people’s words and actions. If you feel slighted, you can use perspective and ask, “Did that person intend to hurt me or did he/she just come across in an awkward manner?”
