Digital Citizenship Week 2018 is October 15-19. During TA on October 18th,
all students will participate in a digital citizenship lesson that focuses on
the information students share online. This lesson will help our students
identify some of the benefits of sharing information online, as well as reflect
on the risks of sharing inappropriate information (oversharing) online. We want
the students to think critically about what they choose to post and share about
themselves online.
Here is a Family Tip Sheet
from Common Sense Media to support your discussions with your
students regarding this lesson. Feel free to save the Common Sense
Media website as a great resource to support your students in
becoming aware of their digital footprint.
In addition to the lesson mentioned above, on October 16th there
will be a Digital Citizenship Expo for all parents (and students in 4th grade
and older) at Rachel Carson Middle School. The flyer for
this event is included here. You will have the opportunity to
attended Breakout Sessions on the following topics:
- Sexting/Legal Implications
- FCPS Family Resources on Digital Citizenship
- Digital Footprint & Photo Sharing
- FCPS Digital Tools to Enhance Instruction
- Video Games & Violent Content
- Digital Balance & Well-Being
- Fake News & Safe Web Searching
- Family Engagement: Building Digital Citizenship at Home
If you plan to attend, please complete

 From the Library:
Teams are forming for our second annual Battle of the Books! This is a year-long program that culminates in a quiz-bowl type competition in April. Many of our students had a great experience with this team event at Herndon Middle School. Regardless of whether students have participated in BoB previously or not, we’re excited about continuing the fun at the high school level. Returning staff-member coaches and first-time coaches are getting ready for a terrific year. Students who want to learn more about what is involved or about how to join a team can stop by the library or email us at hhs_library@fcps.edu.
The library’s first reading challenge of the year has begun! This is a “Create Your Own” reading challenge—students can register by letting us know via a brief Google form what they’ve set for their personal challenge. The Google form and additional details can be found on the library’s announcements page on Blackboard. The challenge goes from now through November 26, the day we return from Thanksgiving break. All participants will enjoy cake one day in early December, and will be entered into a raffle for some prizes. We hope your student will accept the challenge!
|
Student Parking - As of 9/24/18, we are at capacity for student parking. The green lot (front/side of school) is still under construction, and when it opens, we will place more students there. We will let our community know when the lot is almost finished and will then re-open a senior (and then junior) lottery.

The Fairfax County Youth Survey will be administered to 10th and 12th grade students on November 13th and 14th. This brief survey, a collaborative effort between the Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, asks students questions about risky behavior, mental health, physical health, and safety. Results from the survey are used to determine the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities and identify areas of need. The survey is anonymous, and no individual information is reported. A copy of the survey is available to parents and/or guardians online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/youth-survey. If you do not wish for your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form (English and Spanish) and return it to your child’s school counselor no later than November 7, 2018.
