Fairfax Youth Survey
The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board
of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The
results of this survey are published each year on http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/demogrph/youthpdf.htm
and are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth-serving
county agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of
prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is
also used to identify changing trends and areas of need. The survey is
anonymous and no individual information is reported. The survey will be given
to 8th grade students during Social Studies class.
The Fairfax County Youth Survey asks questions about risky
behavior, mental health, physical health, and safety. There are questions about
behaviors related to alcohol, illegal drugs, or misuse of prescription drugs.
Additional questions about depression, student stress, bullying and harassment,
and questions about personal health, and for students in eighth, tenth, and
twelfth grade only, sexual behavior, will be included in the survey. Students
are also asked about specific protective factors concerning health and safety.
You have the right to preview the survey and may deny
permission for your child to participate if you desire. If a student is
uncomfortable with any question on the survey, the student does not have to
answer that question or may elect to discontinue the survey. While it is hoped
that as many students as possible will participate, you have the option of
completing the attached form if you wish to opt out your child.
The survey will be administered to 8th grader
students between November 7-16, 2018. A copy of the survey will be
available to parents and/or guardians online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/youthsurvey
and in the school counseling office of your child's school beginning October 5,
2018. If you do not wish for your child to take part in the survey,
please complete THIS FORM and return it to the main office no later
than October 19, 2018.
School Counselors in the Classroom
The school counseling team has just finished lessons through all
Science Classrooms. The topics covered were:
- School Counselor’s Role
- Student Needs Assessment
- Positivity Project Introduction
- Student Character Traits Survey
Franklin Middle School is excited to introduce the
Positivity Project this year. The mission of the Positivity project is:
To empower America’s youth to
build positive relationships and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the
character strengths in us all.
Franklin Staff participated in the same Character Traits
survey that the students took. Our staff all have their top three Character traits
displayed outside their door. Students have now identified their own top
three and were excited discover the similarities and differences with their
peers and teachers. Positivity Project mini-lessons will continue twice a
week during 5th pd. throughout the year. Lessons will
dive deeper into the value of each character trait. The follow-up lesson
in 5th pd. on Monday was a discussion of the hashtag
“#otherpeoplematter”.
Franklin MS PTA
Hello Parents,
PTA Membership
Thank you to those of who have already joined. We greatly appreciate your support! Unfortunately, we are still behind in numbers. We are working hard to make up the deficit, but this can only be accomplished with everyone’s help. We welcome and encourage everyone to contribute to the Friends of Franklin Membership Drive. This tax-deductible donation will provide resources not funded by the school’s budget. Our goal is to provide the best educational experience for all students. For example, these funds will support student and faculty programs like NJHS and the Teacher Mentor Program. There are also enrichment activities including the Parent/Teen Book Club and the Math Counts Competition. Lastly, we use these funds to appreciate all of the faculty and staff here at Franklin and celebrate student’s achievements with end of the year parties. Our suggested donation is $100 per family, but any amount is greatly appreciated and puts us closer to our goal. Any donation of $10 and above includes PTA membership for one parent allowing you to vote on issues affecting the school and students. To donate and support Franklin, please click here.

Food and Nutrition Services Newsletter
Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is excited for the 2018-2019 school year with continued commitment to influence a generation through healthy eating behaviors. Our elementary menu this year features over 20 new menu items based on months’ of student taste tests and feedback.
Another significant program enhancement is the online meal applications for free and reduced-price meals that launched in August. This new system allows families to receive approval faster and can be completed online or on any mobile device by following this link.
Each fall, we look to the month of October for “National Farm to School Month” and “National School Lunch Week.” Farm to school (F2S) programming gives our students access to nutritious food while enhancing classroom education through experiential learning related to food, agriculture, nutrition and health. FNS has also developed “Garden to Cafeteria” checklist that guides schools on how to use produce from their edible gardens in the cafeteria.
Research has long shown the benefits of farm to school programming in public health, community economic development, education and environmental quality. By promoting farm to school you can enhance the physical and social learning environment for students in core content areas. As we consider being an ethical and global citizen as outlined in the “Portrait of a Graduate,” farm to school encourages children to expand their knowledge and attitudes about the environment. If your school wishes to become more involved in F2S, please feel free to contact FNS.
National School Lunch Week is October 15-19, 2018 with the theme “School Lunch: Lots 2 Love.” The school cafeteria is not only a place for students to simply eat breakfast and lunch but can assist in promoting the immediate and long-term benefits of healthy food choices. Whether you love the school menus, the dining space or the people who prep and serve the meals; there is “lots 2 love” about school lunch.
Whether it is National Farm to School Month or National School Lunch week, the new school year is sure to be full of exciting health and wellness themed celebrations.
For more information on how you can celebrate healthy eating in your school food environment, please contact the Food Service Office at (703) 813-4800.
FCPSOn News and Resources
If your child misplaces their computer, to please come to
the help desk ASAP. And, to continue coming back each day, due to the
fact that most laptops are found within 3 days. For those that go longer, Mr.
Jones will begin an investigation to try to track down the computer for the
student. We do not want students not having their computer for days and
days, or even weeks. We want them to have their computer to use within
their daily instruction situation.
