The Wolftrap Connection: Week of October 9

Principal's Message

Principal Theresa Khuluki

Dear Wolftrap Families:

Math Education Night for Parents!

Wolftrap Faculty will be teaching parents about our philosophy of teaching math, strategies for building a strong mathematical foundation, and the structure of a math workshop. Following a brief opening session, you will be able to choose two break-out sessions to attend. There are seven different and exciting sessions covering a variety of grade levels and content that are being offered. We are asking for parents to sign up for their break-out sessions, as this will help our presenters customize the presentations for the number of attendees. All of the details about the sessions and the registration link can be found on this brochure. We hope to see you on Thursday, October 18 from 6:30-8:00 PM!

Crossing Guard

There have been several occasions lately when our dedicated crossing guard, Ms. Edie, has not been present at school arrival or dismissal. The main office cannot see the crosswalk from the building, so we rely on parents calling the office to let us know if Ms. Edie or a Fairfax County police officer is not present. Once we receive notification, we immediately call the McLean District Police Station to report the situation and request a police officer to be dispatched. Crossing guards are trained and authorized employees of the Fairfax County Police Department. Please understand that school employees are prohibited from entering the crosswalk to direct traffic.

Substitutes

Wolftrap is currently experiencing a substitute shortage! The main office keeps a preferred substitute list and our Office Assistant, Caroline Kamel, is trying to add more names to the list. If you know of anyone in the area who substitutes, please ask them if they would like to be added to our list! If so, they can call the main office and speak to Ms. Kamel.

Spirit Day

Wolftrap will celebrate a special school-wide Spirit Day on Wednesday, October 24th. In schools across the country, students and staff will wear orange in recognition of Unity Day, a national bullying prevention effort.  At Wolftrap we teach our students to be “Upstanders” instead of bystanders, and to stand up for others if they witness bullying or disrespectful behavior. Please help us to send a clear message that our school is a safe and supportive place for every student, and encourage your students to wear orange on October 24th for Unity Day.

Wolftrap History

Did you know that Wolftrap Elementary was originally named Waverly Elementary?!? You can read all about the history of our school on the new history page of our website: https://wolftrapes.fcps.edu/about/history

Sincerely,
Teresa Khuluki
Principal

Message from the PTA

pta

Greetings Wolftrap Families:

How is it already October?   This month is especially busy from a PTA perspective so we want to take a moment to highlight the diversity of PTA sponsored events and in the same breath continue to encourage you to join the PTA.  It is never too late and your membership is integral to our ability to fully fund these activities.  In fact, the PTA is sponsoring a very special event tonight: Family Science Night!  Join us from 6-8pm in the Wolftrap Elementary gym for this unique event which doesn't happen every year. Not only will the kids enjoy a diversity of science related interactive exhibits hosted by the Children’s Science Center, it also is a great primer for our Edison Expo STEAM fair held in March where students can show off their science and engineering ideas.

Currently only 53% of families are PTA members which not only falls short of this year’s membership goal but also falls short of membership last year.  We can do better!  We also recently added the option for PayPal to the PTA website to make it even easier to become a PTA member.

Take a look at this edition of The Connection for information regarding many of the events the PTA is responsible for this month (for a full list see the Upcoming Events Section at the end of The Connection).  If you have yet to join- please understand your membership directly supports these activities and become a member today.

Thank you for your attention and your membership!

Your PTA Board,

Sarah Helou, President (president@wolftrappta.org)

Jessica Jue, President-elect (president-elect@wolftrappta.org)

Christine Harney, Secretary (secretary@wolftrappta.org)

Lori Bowlin, Treasurer (treasurer@wolftrappta.org)

Safe Routes

No Parking on Talisman Drive!

IMPORTANT Safety Note:

Wolftrap continues to have problems with parents/nannies dropping off/picking up students on the school side of Talisman between Beulah and Saint Roman. There is NO parking/NO standing/NO stopping allowed during school drop off and pick up in that area. This is a FFX County/VDOT law.

Please use the designated kiss-n-ride or park in a safe area if you are walking. Running late or not wanting your child to get wet in the rain is not an excuse! This is a very important safety issue and we implore all to follow.

National Walk to School Day

National Walk to School Day and our first Bike Train of the year are on Wednesday, October 10! The Fairfax County PD bike patrol will lead the train starting at 8 on the corner of Beulah & Liberty Tree Lane.  Join there or along the route, the map is below. Walking Wednesdays and Caffe Amouri coffee continue weekly.

Beulah Road Crosswalk Update

Good news! Our crosswalk was awarded a Transportation Alternatives Project (TAP) Grant through VDOT of $200,000. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will be designing the improvements in early 2019 and will set a schedule for completion. Initial expectations are that work will be underway by 2021.

The many completed parent surveys in October 2017, and letters of support from our crossing guard, Mrs. Edie Adcock, and Mrs. Khuluki all contributed to this win for our community. Thank you! We look forward to seeing what FCDOT will design to improve safety at our crosswalk.

Contact our PTA at president@wolftrappta.org if you can be the lead or help. All materials are provided to create our program. Enrolling by October 15 gives us the best value and bonus prizes from Scripps (last day to enroll is Dec. 15). The Bee is offered through our Fairfax County Council of PTAs (FCCPTA).

Cultural Arts

On October 31, the Cultural Arts Committee welcomes Flow Circus' Paul Miller to Wolftrap Elementary.  Flow Circus will perform the interactive show, Science of Awesome, at our first Cultural Arts Assemblies of the year.  Flow Circus leverages juggling and other skill toys to create positive impact, boost energy, and strengthen connections while shifting mindsets to redefine failure and how we approach stress.  By sharing the experience of struggling, failing, and succeeding, Flow Circus endeavors to connect children in an authentic, unplugged way, working to create new self-awareness and a growth mindset.  In Science of Awesome, Paul leaves students (and teachers!) with the desire to discover the forces of the invisible, physical world around them.
