Kindergarten friends read a book together during language arts.
Dear
Willow Springs,
Thank you to everyone that came out to Chipotle for our first Restaurant Night of the year. It was an awesome turnout and great to see so many smiling faces. We are thankful to our families and dedicated PTA for helping us continue to build relationships with families and strengthen our community.
In our classrooms this week, first graders were busy watching a live bird cam and recording observations in their notebooks as true scientists do. They also have plans to observe a rain forest on a webcam to
talk about different environments as well as a zoo cam to talk about habitats.
Third graders in Ms. VanDerHorst's classroom are learning more about passion projects based off of the book The Curious Classroom. Passion projects are basically mini inquiries into topics of interest! This week students self-selected their own questions
to investigate further. The idea is that students will investigate,
collaborate, problem solve, and share their learning with others. To learn more about what's happening in your child's classroom, follow us on Twitter @WSESfox.
In honor of Columbus Day, students will have a four day week as this Monday, October 8th, is a staff development day for FCPS and a student holiday for students. We look forward to engaging in professional development and ensuring that we continue to provide meaningful and rigorous instruction.
Mark your calendars! We're joining thousands of other schools and celebrating National Walk to School Day. We hope you will walk with your children to school this Wednesday, October 10th, and visit the welcome table behind the bus loop near the walking paths. Families and staff will gather at 8:45 a.m. to enjoy snacks and games. Or walk your kids to the bus stop and visit with your neighbors! Walking to school or the bus stop helps support healthy habits, strengthen our community, promote safety, and create a cleaner environment.
Have
a wonderful 3 day weekend.
Sincerely,
Dylan Taylor, Principal
Rashida Green, Assistant Principal
Sara Van Aalst, Assistant Principal

 The Virginia Tech
Maker Festival is entering its 4th year. For 3 years, the Virginia Tech Maker Festival has
hosted its STEM festival at the Virginia Tech Northern Virginia Center in Falls
Church, VA. The goal of this event is to increase STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, & Math) learning in all ages, nationalities, genders, and
socioeconomic backgrounds.
Virginia Tech is one of the leading research universities in
the country specializing in engineering, science, and math. Our very own
students and professors discovered the lead in the water in Flint, Michigan.
With our partnerships, and laboratories, Virginia Tech wants to expand the STEM
growth in the National Capital Region with the Virginia Tech Maker Festival. We
hope to inspire future generations of students, researchers, professors, and leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.
We will have robots, experiments, and interactive games.
Come join the fun and register now!
We are also in need of volunteers. This is a
great way for high school students to earn service hours, support the
local community, and learn more about STEM. As a thank you, lunch will be
provided and you will receive a Certificate of Appreciation. If you are interested, please sign up and complete the volunteer application.
