Fitness Focus

Motivating Kids to Get Fit

Parents and caregivers play an active role in encouraging children’s health.
Eating healthy foods is a key factor in maintaining their overall well-being.
But, this should be balanced with regular physical activity.

Children who are physically active on a regular basis:

  • Are less likely to become overweight
  • Have a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  • Have reduced blood cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure
  • Have higher self-esteem and reduced incidences of depression and anxiety
  • Are more likely to build strong bones and muscles
  • Are more attentive in school

We know why children need to be active, it’s time to get them up and
moving. Here’s how:

  1. Focus on fun, Limit TV and computer time
  2. Choose fitness or activity-oriented gifts
  3. Schedule play dates
  4. Go to the playground
  5. Get fit as a family and encourage walking or biking to school
  6. Be a model of fitness and look for fitness activities at your school

Autumn flies by in a flash, so take advantage of the crisp weather and beautiful foliage with this list of fun things to do:

  • Rake leaves
  • Go apple or pumpkin picking
  • Go on a hike to see the fall colors
  • Go to a corn maze
  • Play some football
  • Plant bulbs in the garden for the spring
  • Run in a fall race like the MCM kids run or Mclean 5k
  • Jump in a pile of leaves!

Chinese Characters

1st grade: We sang classroom rule song and the song你好吗 (ni hao ma?) and practice how to say how are you? 你好吗 (ni hao ma?) I’m fine, thank you! 我很好,谢谢! (wo hen hao, xie xie). We also did a Chinese number 1 10 exercise.  Ask your kid to show you how to count Chinese numbers from 1 – 10 with the body gesture. It helps them remember how to write the Chinese number characters.

2nd grade: Students are currently learning Chinese pronouns. We started with singular personal pronouns (, wǒ, I; , nǐ, you; , tā, he; , tā, she) and practiced to use them in sentences to make a statement. Students also learned plural personal pronouns by adding (men) to the singular forms. We used games, worksheets, and songs in class to practice.

3rd grade: We discussed and made rules for Chines class at the beginning of the year. Students are currently learning vocabulary related to school. They have learned to name people, places, and things in a school using Chinese. They will also learn to say different subjects they take at school using Chinese. Ultimately, students are expected to be able to use Chinese to talk about what they do at school and what they like or dislike about school.

4th grade:  We talked about the classroom expectations and classroom procedure.  Students also set goals in writing and speaking to improve their Chinese. There are many ways to review Chinese at home, they can go to blackboard to review what we have learned, check out Chinese books/videos from our school library and even come to my office (Rm 424) to check out Chinese textbooks and Chinese story books and bring home to read. Please encourage your child to reach their goals!

5th grade:  We talked about the classroom expectations and classroom procedure.

6th grade: We talked about the classroom expectations and classroom procedure.  Students also set goals in writing and speaking to improve their Chinese especially by the end of the school year, there is a Jr. PALS assessment (speaking and writing). I would highly recommend parent to encourage your child to spend more time at home to review and practice writing characters, check out blackboard for what we have learned after each lesson. Thank you for your support.

How to practice Chinese on Blackboard

(Log in to Blackboard 24/7 -> 035-schoolinfo-1819-YR: CES School Information->Chinese LTC)

Blackboard is a great learning tool for children to review what they learn in class. On blackboard, each grade levels have their own folders. Children can click on the folder to find the topic that they are learning right now.  Besides, there are many learning resources links, songs, videos and games. Please check out the Chinese-LTC on blackboard! If you have any question or concerns, please feel free to contact us!

(xiè) (xiè)!    Thank you for supporting the Chinese program!

中 秋 节 快 乐 Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) is a harvest festival, celebrated in China and other East Asian countries, such as Vietnam and Singapore. It’s always in September or October, on month 8 day 15 of the Chinese lunar calendar.

In 2018, it’s September 24th (Monday). Please check out the Chinese-LTC on blackboard for the Mid-Autumn Festival videos.

1st grade: We talked about the legend story of the Mid-Autumn Festival and wrote the character moon .

2nd & 3rd grade: Students listened to the story of Hou Yi and Chang'e (the legend that is believed to explain the origin of the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival). Students discussed and retold the story. We also discussed popular Mid-Autumn Festival traditions and customs.

4th, 5th & 6th grade: We talked about the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese people eat a special food called mooncake 月饼to celebrate with their families. We made mooncake shaped oil diffusers to celebrate the festival. You can add few drops of essential oils to the mooncake and make it smells great and very relaxing!

Interim Reports

Interims for 1st - 6th grades will be sent home for all students on Thursday, October 11th.  Kindergarten teachers will share student progress at individual conferences on November 5th and 6th.  If you have any concerns regarding your child's progress please contact your child's teacher.  If a conference is needed, teachers are more than happy to coordinate.
