A Message from Our
Principal
Welcome to October! It’s hard to believe, but we are already
halfway through the first quarter! Students and teachers have had a wonderful
month full of learning – learning academics, learning routines and
expectations, and learning about their new classroom communities. Last week was
Deaf Awareness Week – ask your children one thing they did to celebrate in
their classrooms.
One important element of setting students up for success
this year is two-way open communication with you. In next week’s Take Home
Tuesday folder, you might find an interim report from your child’s teacher.
Interims are a vehicle for teachers to communicate an early concern about your
child’s performance in an academic area or a citizenship skill. It is meant to
begin a conversation about how we can partner with you to support your child;
please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about an
interim report. I encourage you to participate in a parent/teacher conference
to learn more about what we can do together to help your child experience
greater success this year.
I am always available to speak with you as well to promote
communication between home and school on behalf of your child.
Warm regards,
Diane
Deaf Awareness Week Highlights

Last week we celebrated Deaf Awareness Week at CWES! All students
participated in deaf awareness activities to better understand what deafness is
and what it might be like to be deaf or hard of hearing. We highlighted some of
our awesome kids in the DHOH program through a video that all students watched
We also got to see different hearing aid equipment and read advice from deaf
students and staff (e.g. “treat me like a normal kid!”). Ask your student(s)
what they learned during Deaf Awareness Week!

International
Night, October 11th
To celebrate the many countries and cultures here at CWES, we will
be having an International Night on October 1, from 6:30pm-8:30pm.
For questions, additional information, or to participate contact Necole
Brown at NLBrown@fcps.edu

Bullying
Prevention Month
Did you know that October is Bullying Prevention Month? Each week
this month we’ll share a fact, tip or quote related to bullying prevention.
Stopbullying.gov
defines bullying as ”unwanted,
aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or
perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be
repeated, over time.”
An easy way to remember this is using the R.I.P.
acronym. Bullying is:
R – Repeated. The action of the bully is a repeated
action, occurring time after time.
I – Intentional. The bully is intentional with their behavior/actions.
P – Power Imbalance. In bullying situations, there is a real
or perceived power imbalance between the two parties. This imbalance can be
physical strength, access to information, or even social power.
If a situation does not have all three
of these components, it is likely a conflict situation and can still be
addressed, but in a different way.

Know About Bullying” page.

Artists Busy Creating Their Masterpiece
Art students across all grade levels are hard at work
on their PTA art fundraiser! Each grade is given a drawing topic for the
assignment. When the drawings are finished, we will send them in to a company,
Display My Art, who will make the artwork available for CWES families to order
printed on various items. Keep an eye out for the order forms in Tuesday
folders in October. Families will be able to order their child’s artwork
printed on coasters, magnets, tea towels, water bottles, and more!
