RRMS Spirit Day September 28, 2018

A note from Dr. Goodloe:

Dear Rocky Run Families:

It has been a great week at Rocky Run MS!   We celebrated our focus on the character strength of teamwork with a spirit day today where students and staff represented their favorite teams.  It has been fun to see teams of students in action in classrooms collaborating on projects such as baking Snickerdoodles in FACs, writing Pantomime plays in Theater, and solving proportion equations in math 7.

Fall is an exciting season full of community events including high school sports, football games, and Homecoming celebrations at our feeder schools.  Rocky Run students are welcomed and encouraged to attend events at their high schools.  It is expected that students will Raise the Ram in all that they do by demonstrating positive behavior and following all event rules when in attendance.  I am looking forward to seeing many of our current and former students at the Chantilly HS Homecoming parade and football game later this evening.

Safety and Security Reminder

All students are permitted to carry backpacks throughout the building.  We have asked students to ensure that they keep all of their belongings (backpack, supplies, lunches, laptops, instruments) either with them or secure them in their locker when not needed.  In order to ensure that the hallways are clear, and to keep student personal belongings secure, any items left in the hallways or on top of locker commons will be stored in room 94, Officer Jones' office, until claimed.  Students can see any administrator with questions.

Important Resource for Families:

It is important for parents and staff to understand the potential harmful effects of Vaping and Juuling.  FCPS has provided information and resources for families on the website.  I encourage you to review the information and discuss it with your child. https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/alcohol-tobacco-and-other-drug-programs/information

I welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions. Please feel free to reach out to me for support at any time.  I hope to see you at Rocky Run MS very soon.

Sincerely,

Amy T. Goodloe, Ed.D

Under Construction:  Renovation News

  • We are anticipating lighting, curtain and the partition will be installed on our new stage in early October.
  • Progress continues to be made on the new addition on the exterior of the building.  We hope to be under roof very soon.
  • Ramsville entrances, exits, pathways (Trailer area and bathrooms) are monitored by exterior Closed Circuit TV cameras at all times.  Additional cameras will be added to cover the walking paths from Point Pleasant close to the building

Air Quality:  During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month.  Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.

If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.

We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.

FCPSOn Spotlight

Our teachers have been working hard the past few years to use our FCPSOn devices as a way to offer student choice in how they access, process, and create content. Along this journey we have found that some lessons and activities are better suited to a paper and pencil format, but the 1:1 access to devices have allowed for new opportunities for student learning.

Recently our Latin teacher, Magistra Knight polled her class to reflect on a recent activity in which students were given the option to complete a translation activity using a traditional worksheet format or a sequencing structure in Google Slides.

Here are a few responses that highlights our students’ reflections around why having a digital option is helpful to their learning. Review a full summary of responses here

"I like the slides more than the worksheets because, the slides are more attractive then the work pages and because when I make a mistake I can early fix it. I also like the slides more because I cant lose them like I would pages from the workbook."

"I like slides better because I feel like they are more lain out for me and it makes it easier to learn the Latin since it shows me the steps it takes to translate the Latin. It also helps me stay organized and keep everything neat since it is being typed."

"The charts help me think through the steps that are needed while the workbook doesn't really show that. Also, I like color and the workbook doesn't really show color. I also like it is almost impossible for me to lose rather than a paper I don't have to worry about losing it."
