MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

News and Information

Gentle Reminder: When you are dropping off your student at Kiss and Ride – Door 11, please drive forward as far as you can in the circle.  Your student should leave your car quickly and safely.  Traffic is very heavy at Kiss and Ride and not driving as far forward as possible before dropping off your student causes delays in other parts of the parking lot and on Stonecroft Blvd.

New Custodian Supervisor

Rosa Cruz – New Custodian Supervisor.  Please join me in welcoming Rosa Cruz to the Westfield family.  Rosa has worked in FCPS for 18 years.  She is currently the Custodian Supervisor at Kilmer MS.  Rosa and her husband are the proud parents of twins – a boy and girl.  She will start at Westfield on October 8.

Dawna Poyner is Assistant Nurse Manager and School Public Health Nurse with the Fairfax County Health Department.  She provides PHN support for Westfield HS, Terraset ES and Forest Edge ES.

Ms. Poyner has been a Public Health Nurse in the School Health Program since 2014 and has worked as a Care Coordinator and Health Promotion Specialist. She has participated in Road DAWGS (Don’t Associate with Gangs) for several years and led, organized, and analyzed a new health promotion program at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center to promote healthy choices.

She holds a B.S. degree in Health Science from James Madison University and completed the ABSN Nursing program at George Washington University in 2013.  Prior to becoming a nurse, she worked in systems development and management at Electronic Data Systems. In the years between careers, Ms. Poyner raised a daughter and three sons and was an active volunteer in the Langley pyramid from Kindergarten through high school as a class parent, PTA volunteer, athletic booster and “drama mama”.

Reduced Fees Program

Free and reduced-price meal applications may be completed online or by submitting a handwritten, paper application for the 2018-19 school year. THESE APPLICATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED EVERY SCHOOL YEAR.  Electronic meal applications are quick, easy, and available in the following languages: English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog (Filipino), French, and Vietnamese.

Both the online application and paper application now include a designated section with the consent to share information for other programs. This update allows parents and guardians to complete the free and reduced-price meal application and the consent to share information in the same document.  This consent form may qualify your student for free/reduced fees to include testing, class or athletic fees.

Paper applications must be the original red print forms, which are available at school offices, school cafeterias, and other FCPS buildings. Copied application forms cannot be accepted.

The last day to receive free/reduced meals, based on 2017-18 SY, is October 10, 2018.

More information is available on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals web page.

Dress Code

On June 14, the Fairfax County School Board updated the dress code language in the Student Rights & Responsibilities regulation. The School Board voted to remove gendered language in the dress code and require that dress code conversations be held in private to respect the dignity of the students.

FCPS respects students’ right to express themselves in the way they dress. It is important, however, that their appearance is appropriate for a K-12 school setting.

As outlined in the dress code, any clothing that interferes with or disrupts the educational environment is unacceptable.  Clothing with language or images that are vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene; or clothing that promotes illegal or violent conduct, such as gang symbols, the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia; or clothing that contains threats is prohibited.

More information about the dress code is available in the FCPS Guide for Families section which has been updated since the original print version was distributed and can be viewed here:

The School Board is accepting applications for the Student Leadership Development Program, open to any high school sophomore or junior in good academic standing.  The program is for students interested in a future in law, government or public policy. Twelve students will be chosen to work closely with the School Board to see how FCPS is governed and will give the students opportunities to participate on various advisory committees to the School Board, and even to seek election as the student representative on the School Board.

The Student Leaders attend and participate in:

  • Group orientation (December 2018)
  • School Board forum work session (January 2019)
  • Mock Forum (March 2019)

Students should submit the brief application and one-page statement of interest to their principals by October 15, 2018. Principals will submit applications to the School Board Office by October 29, 2018.  Each School Board member will select one student from their magisterial district, and the at-large members will select one student from all the applications received. The selected student leaders and remaining applicants will be notified by email in late November.
