The Wildcat Way - September 24

Principal's Message

 Dear Whitman Community,

This week marks the official start of the fall season!  We have several things happening at Whitman that I want to make sure you know about.  First of all, our After School Program begins on Tuesday, September 25.  We have late buses available for students to stay after to get extra help from their teachers as well as participate in clubs and enrichment activities.  Students must sign up with teachers in advance to stay after and also sign up for enrichment activities during lunch.  If you need more information, contact our After School Program Specialist, Mrs. Blizzard at jmblizzard@fcps.edu.

Also on Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00 PM, we will be having an important parent information session about National History Day (see more details below).  In my humble opinion, Whitman Middle School hosts the finest National History Day in all of Virginia!  The students create incredible projects to showcase the deep research and higher-level thinking necessary to complete such a rigorous endeavor.  This project prepares students for the rigors of IB at Mount Vernon High School and exemplifies the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate (www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/portrait-graduate).

This Wednesday, September 26 from 2:45 – 5:00 PM, we will be hosting our first Whitman Family Market.  Whitman has partnered with Capital Area Foods to provide groceries and fresh produce to families in our community.  The food is free to all and everyone is welcome.  We are looking for volunteers to help prepare the market from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM as well as help run the market until 5:00 PM.  Please contact Mrs. Bayer at dabayer@fcps.edu if  you are able to volunteer.

Thank you for all you do to support our Whitman students and have a great week!

Medicaid Expansion and Availability of State Health Insurance for Children

The Virginia Department of Education recently sent communication to all schools in Virginia relating to information on the availability of the state’s health insurance for children (FAMIS) and new insurance coverage for adults that will soon be available as a result of Medicaid expansion. This memo may be reviewed at August 8, 2018 Superintendents Letter to Principals.

Additionally, the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) distributed two flyers to all public schools in Virginia. One flyer provides key information about the availability of this new initiative and the second provides information on FAMIS. These flyers are available in English and Spanish and may be viewed at the links below.
