Principal's Message - Week 4

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

This week’s message is all about the importance of attending school every day.  The doors of the school open at 8:30am each morning.

This video features Kindergarten, Third Grade, and Sixth Grade students telling us why it is important to come to school every day!

September Is Attendance Awareness Month

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Regular attendance is essential for students to form positive peer and adult relationships and to learn. In fact, when students miss significant amounts of instructional time, they tend to lose momentum academically. Of course, there are times that students may have health or other concerns that may prevent them from being present.

Parents are invited to partner with schools, so that together, we can identify ways to help children stay positive and engaged in learning. FCPS’ goal is to help each child feel connected and goal-directed, so that they have the best possible outcomes in school this year.

More information about attendance is available online.

Did You Know?

  • Missing just 2 days of school per month adds up to 18 absences; in other words, missing 10% of the year’s learning*
  • Chronic absenteeism (18 or more days in a year) in elementary school is linked to lower reading levels and test scores and higher dropout rates later in life*
  • School attendance is a legal requirement. New FCPS policies based on Virginia law automatically flag students with 5 or more unexcused absences and require the student’s parents or guardians to work with the school to create an Attendance Plan.

Let’s work together to get Timber Lane students in school and ready to learn!

Any absence must be reported to Timber Lane each day a student is absent, including:

  • Medical absences                       - Religious holidays
  • Family trips                                 - Absences for any other reason

Call 703-206-5300 or email TimberLaneES.Attendance@fcps.edu

Contact the school before 9am to avoid receiving an automated attendance call.

Medical absences: If your student is ill, please keep them home from school and seek appropriate medical attention. Inform the school each day that your student is out for medical reasons. Students with fevers should be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school.

If there are any changes to your child’s schedule please email your child’s teacher AND TimberLaneES.Attendance@fcps.edu. Use this email if your child will be late, absent or needs to go home early. Also use this email for changes in transportation or if someone else will pick up or meet your child. Dismissal changes must be emailed before 2:30.
