Parents interested in the
Advanced Academic Program at Forestdale Elementary are invited to attend an
information session on October 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the
library. At this meeting we will cover
the continuum of advanced academics services provided at Forestdale ES.
Advanced Academics Level IV
Referral Deadlines:
October 11th – Students
in grades 3 – 6 who are new to FCPS
January 10th – Students
in grades 2 – 7 who are not new to FCPS
Please contact Katelyn
Spengler at kcspengler@fcps.edu if
you want further information. There will be another meeting in December that
will review the Level IV referral process.
The Cognitive Abilities Test
(CogAT) will be administered to all second graders and select students new to Fairfax
County on October 9, 2018 – October 12, 2018. It is important that your child attend school on these days. If
possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your
child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your
child has had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing.
The purpose of the CogAT is to provide information about students’
developed abilities in verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning. The types
of tasks included in the test are based on content that children are likely to
have experienced in school. However, the way questions are asked and specific
test content are not necessarily what children have previously experienced.
Children are not expected to know the answers to all questions and will be
given opportunities to practice sample items before taking the test. The CogAT
is an abilities test, so children are not expected to study or prepare for the
test the way they would for an achievement test.
Score reports will be provided to parents once results become
available. Typically, these reports are available in January. If you have any
questions about this test, please contact the Advanced Academics Resource
Teacher (AART), Katelyn Spengler, or School Test Coordinator, Kolette De La
Cruz, at your child's school.
An
ability test score is required for the Advanced Academics Programs Level IV
screening process. Parents
or guardians of students in grades 3 – 7 may request one retake for either the
CogAT or the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT) ability tests. In Fairfax County Public Schools, the NNAT is usually administered in first grade and the CogAT is administered in 2nd grade. Students must wait at least 6
months between retaking the same group abilities test. Requests for CogAT retakes must be made by October 1st. Requests for NNAT retakes must be made by November 5th. Please contact Kolette De La Cruz at kmdelacruz@fcps.edu to request a retake.
