Principal's Letter

Dear Waynewood Owls,

We hope you all had a great week!  It was wonderful to see all the smiling faces on picture day. A big thank you to the parent volunteers who helped to facilitate pictures.  We are also very appreciative of the parent volunteers who have been coming in to help during lunchtime.

In Renovation news, we added some additional wood borders to our playground this week to prevent the mulch from spilling out onto the sidewalks and basketball court.  There are also some brand new bike racks near the playground, outside Door 8.  These are now available for student use.  As a reminder, students must walk their bikes on Waynewood property in order to ensure the safety of all.

During the three hour early release, our teachers participated in professional development sessions.  These sessions were focused around our School Improvement and Innovation Plan, and allowed teachers time to learn from each other.  We have a schoolwide focus on improving communication skills this year, which aligns with the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate model.  There is more information about this focus following this letter.

It was great to see so many of you at Chuck E. Cheese on Wednesday.  Mrs. Cachine had so much fun playing Skee-Ball and winning tickets J Clean Kitchen Nights are a great way to support the school and take a night off from cooking.  Please mark your calendars now for October 17, when we will have another Clean Kitchen Night at Moe’s.  This will be our first of three Moe’s Nights, but this one is the most important.  They will give us 40% of our sales!  That is twice the normal amount, so we need to take advantage of this great offer!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alice Berenbaum, Assistant Principal

Staff Spotlight: Mr. Reigner!

Reigner

Hi! My name is Ben Reigner. You may know me as Mr. R. I’m one of the general music teachers and choir directors.  I teach all the grades how to listen to, create, and enjoy music!  I also love writing songs about grade level content. Whether it be Jamestown, the continents and oceans, or the planets, I enjoy teaching through music!

I’ve been married 11 years and love travelling, going out to eat, reading, and watching movies.  I’m also a huge DC United fan!  Vamos United!!!

Admin Note:  Mr. R is always willing to lend a hand and do whatever is best for students.  His dedication to students shows by the number of 5th and 6th grade students who choose to participate in choir each year.  This year there are 161 students in the choir!  Wow!

Waynewood Portrait of a Graduate Focus: Communicator

This year, the Waynewood School Improvement and Innovation Plan includes a focus on building communication skills, in order to align with the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate Communicator attribute.  Teachers are working hard to intentionally teach communication skills throughout the curriculum.  We are implementing a variety of strategies school-wide, to include number talks, Responsive Classroom, and interactive read alouds.

For more information and resources regarding Portrait of a Graduate, and how you can support these efforts at home, please visit:
