This week, Mrs. Mott's 5th graders discussed compassion, responsibility, and science as they adopted their new classroom pet, a Grey Syrian hamster, named Sirius Grey.
Dear
Willow Springs,
We are so proud of our students for quickly, safely, and effectively participating in our safety programs this week. Under the direction of Mr. Silvis and Mr. Burda, our student team of Safety Patrols did an outstanding job assisting students during our bus evacuation drill. Students learned more about bus safety and the importance of following basic rules to stay safe while riding the school bus and waiting at bus stops. Today we successfully completed another fire drill and practiced our first lock down drill of the school year. As with fire drills and other safety programs, our purpose is to promote safety awareness and to familiarize everyone with an emergency plan.
In addition to promoting safety in our physical school building, Willow Springs' educators are dedicated to
teaching our students about digital citizenship. We want our students to
use electronic devices and navigate the internet in enriching, safe, and
healthy ways. We will be teaching digital citizenship lessons to all students during the 1st quarter. These lessons will collectively help students to become learners who
will proactively approach their digital access, participation, accountability
and opportunities with empathy, ethics, and a sense of individual, social and civic
responsibility.
We know that digital citizenship is such an important topic to cover with students, so we encourage you to partner with us and continue this conversation about digital citizenship at home. This tip sheet provides some talking points for you to be able to have an open dialogue with your family about digital citizenship and why this is such an important topic.
Parents can access the curriculum using their FCPS 24-7 Parent View account. Once logged in, parents can click the Curriculum tab, and then the Digital Citizenship tab. Another great resource for parents and educators is Common Sense Media, which provides
information about movies, apps, games, and sites your children may be using. It gives key points
depending on what your child is using, recommends age ranges, and has
information from both parents and kids that have experience with whatever the
application is. In addition, FCPS resources can be found here.
We thank you for supporting our work surrounding digital
citizenship and our students!
Sincerely,
Dylan Taylor, Principal
Rashida Green, Assistant Principal
Sara Van Aalst, Assistant Principal

A Closer Look at Earthquakes
A few of our 5th graders took a closer look at earthquakes this week through Google Expeditions and VR technology. By simply looking through our viewers, students explored the earth's crust, tectonic plate movement, examined details deep within the lithosphere, and stepped back to see the Ring of Fire. Learn more about Google Expeditions or watch this short video.

Kindergartners with "Otto the Auto"
Thanks to @TravelWithAAA and "Otto the Auto" our kindergartners learned about traffic safety. They reviewed the importance of buckling up, wearing bicycle helmets, and looking all ways before crossing the street. See our tweet @WSESfox.
Have you updated your child's default plan?

Did you know that PickUp Patrol allows you to set your child’s regular dismissal plan? This is known as your child’s default plan. If you have not done so already, please login and update this information. If your child is going home via their default plan, there is no need to enter a daily plan change.
This is a friendly reminder to please use PickUp Patrol to report ALL
ABSENCES AND CHANGES to your child’s dismissal plans. If your registration
email has expired or you did not receive one, please let us know.
