Churchill Road Receives Excellence Award

award

At the September 13 School Board meeting, Churchill Road received the Board of Education Excellence Award, the Commonwealth's highest award for education excellence.  Thank you to sixth grade teachers Megan Brown and Nicholas Kilpatrick (pictured at left next to Superintendent Brabrand) for accepting this award on behalf of the school.

Getting to Know Churchill:
Cheryl Bamdad, 2nd Grade Teacher

cheryl

This week’s staff spotlight shines on Cheryl Bamdad. Ms. Bamdad is CRS’s longest tenured teacher.  During her 28 years at the school, Ms. Bamdad has worked with four principals and has taught first, second and fifth grades – including a first-second combo and has been the mathematics lead for 24 years.  She considers the advent of the internet the biggest change in education and is proud to be the first 2nd grade teacher who implemented 1:1 computer use in the classroom.  Ms. Bamdad is the monarch butterfly expert at CRS and has even been known to stop by the side of the road to pick wild milkweed to feed the caterpillars.

Ms. Bamdad’s teaching career began at her former elementary school in her home town of New Hartford, New York.  She earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from SUNY Geneseo, a Master of Science in Education with a Math Concentration from SUNY Cortland and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership in Math from George Mason University.  Before deciding on a career in education, Ms. Bamdad was a checkout supervisor at Kmart and worked at a bakery, making her a donut snob who will only eat fresh donuts.

Outside of school, Ms. Bamdad enjoys traveling not only to visit family in Colorado and Myrtle Beach, but to spend time skiing, hiking and camping in the mountains.  Ms. Bamdad’s daughter, Sydney, got a great start at Churchill and is now a junior at Langley HS, about to get her driver’s license.

We are happy that Ms. Bamdad has been such an integral part of Churchill for the past decades.  Oh what stories she must have…

Butterflies Abound

but

Mr. Eddy and students from Ms. Betchar's second grade class get ready to release three monarch butterflies.  Thanks to the school's productive milkweed gardens, this classroom alone expects to have at least 18 monarchs.  Way to go second grade.

Fourth Graders Study Virginia Geography

fourth

Fourth graders created postcards they made to showcase the Piedmont region of Virginia as part of their Virginia studies unit.

Working Together

first

First graders took advantage of one of the last (hopefully) indoor recess times to build this great dinosaur habitat.  What great collaborators they are!

Wellness: Importance of Good Posture

posture

Posture is the position in which we hold our bodies and limbs when standing, sitting or lying down and, probably, most of us have been reminded at some point to maintain good posture. Good posture keeps the bones and joints in alignment so that muscles are being used properly, decreases stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine together, prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, and prevents backache and muscular pain. Good posture also contributes to a confident appearance, which may sound superficial, but our physical stature has been proven to be powerful in informing our mental state. (Quick experiment: Wherever you are sink your head to your shoulders, slump forward, rounding your back; take note of how you feel. Now, take a commanding superhero stance, hands on hips, proud chest, chin lifted; did you feel a boost of confidence?) Periodically assess your posture during the day, small corrections on a regular basis can lead to big improvements over time.

Our sixth and fifth graders have an option this year to choose a stability ball over a traditional chair. Although a stability ball is not a great fit for everyone, it can help promote good posture by constantly engaging core abdominal muscles. Many of the students who have selected a stability ball might also suggest that it adds a fun bounce to their school day!

Clip Box Tops, Raise $ for CRS

The Box Tops for Education program is underway again this year! Our school earns money for each Box Top turned in from your household products and grocery items - last year we raised $708 and in total over time we've earned over $25,000 just from clipping Box Tops! Turn in Box Tops as soon as possible to avoid having them expire – don't save them up!

    • Box Tops (including Bonus Box Tops) may be submitted in a sealed Ziploc bag or envelope - or taped/glued to a collection sheet (find them at http://www.boxtops4education.com) to your teacher or the Box Tops collection bin in the front office.
    • To receive credit for your Box Tops, make sure your bag, envelope, and/or collection sheet is labeled with your student's full name and teacher’s name.
    • Use the Box Tops’ bonus app to earn even more. Check it out at: http://www.boxtops4education.com/bonusapp

    Thank you for your support!

As outlined by FCPS Regulation 1367.2, school principals shall offer options to nonprofit organizations that want to make their materials available to students and parents. At Churchill Road, non-profit organizations will be permitted to send home flyers in the take home folder 4 times during the year. The dates for the 2018-2019 school year are the weeks of September 24, December 3, March 4 and May 13. These fliers must be related to the school’s educational mission and be age-appropriate. Community organizations must submit their materials in advance to the school’s principal and must include the disclaimer “These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this School.” Once approved, the organization will be required to make the copies necessary for distribution.
