Justice Newsletter - September 16, 2018

A Note From Principal Eck

"Education promotes equality and lifts people out of poverty. It teaches children how to become good citizens. Education is not just for a privileged few, it is for everyone. It is a fundamental human right." - Ban Ki-moon

Dear Justice Families,

We had a busy week at Justice. We are now up to 2189 registered students. Our Back-to-School night is scheduled for this Thursday, September 20th. More information is included in the section below.

On Monday, September 17th, we kick off the Justice High School Metrobus pilot student bus pass program. In a partnership with Fairfax Connector, City of Fairfax CUE and Metrobus, our students will have access to public transportation free of charge using designated routes. This program will provide an avenue for those who do not have transportation available to participate in after school and community activities, programming offered at other sites and job opportunities. This is extremely exciting and we are looking forward to having every student participate.

If your student is interested in getting a bus pass, he/she must complete the permission form available on the Justice HS Announcements Google site or  go to Student Services to request a pass. For more information, check out this video and visit https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/student-pass/pilot or contact Jillian O’Callaghan at jocallaghan@fcps.edu.

Also, just a reminder that this Wednesday, September 19th, is a 3 hour early release day.

Digital Citizenship

FCPS Shared Responsibility Statement

"The past decade has seen an exponential increase in digital tools and opportunities, which carry the need for students to master a new set of life skills for behaving safely, ethically and responsibly online. Students are much more likely to understand good digital citizenship — the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use — when teachers and parents/trusted adults model it and explicitly teach and promote it on a regular basis." (Crompton 2014)

To that end, it's not just one person's job to teach digital citizenship to our students, but everyone's shared responsibility.

Our students are growing up in a “digital society,” and we are dedicated to teaching our students about digital citizenship.  We want our students to use electronic devices and navigate the Internet in enriching, safe, and healthy ways.  As one of our first steps at Justice, we are going to be teaching digital citizenship lessons to all students four times throughout the year.  These lessons will encourage students to be reflective of what they are posting online and how it portrays them.  They will be encouraged to answer questions such as,  “What are the outcomes of presenting yourself in different ways online?  What are the consequences of ‘digital drama’?  And what are the consequences of oversharing online?”  The lessons will also give them tools to make informed and healthy decisions about social media and digital communication.

We encourage you to partner with us and continue this conversation about digital citizenship at home.  This tip sheet provides some talking points for you to be able to have an open dialogue with your students about digital citizenship and why this is such an important topic.  Please use this tip sheet as a guide to reflect with your student after their first lesson on October 15th.  Another great resource for parents and educators is Common Sense Media, which provides information about movies, apps, games, and sites your children may be using.  It gives key points about them, recommended age ranges, and has information from both parents and kids that have experience with whatever the application is.  We thank you for supporting our work surrounding digital citizenship and our students!
