Dr. Brabrand is visiting CRES

We are excited Dr. Brabrand, FCPS Superintendent, will be visiting CRES on Friday, September 14th.  To welcome him and show our school spirit, all students and staff are encouraged to wear our school colors: blue and white.

Morning Arrival Reminder

The school hours are 9:20 AM - 4:05 PM Monday through Friday. In the interest of safety, it is very important that you do not drop your child off before 8:55 AM. There is no supervision for students before this time and any students are brought to the Main Office until supervision is available in the cafeteria.

Safety is a top priority, and a reminder letter will be sent home with students who are dropped off before this time.  Starting at 8:55, students wait in the cafeteria until 9:05 AM at which time they will be released to the classrooms.

Golf Tournament raised $39,000 for schools

Celebrate Great Falls held its annual Golf Tournament in May.  All proceeds from the event and silent auctions went to Colvin Run ES, Forestville ES, and Great Falls ES.  We are thrilled to announce the Tournament and Auction raised $39,000, and CRES received $$13,000 to put toward school enhancements.  A huge thank you to Dianne Emery and Lisa Cuomo for leading our efforts.  Thank you to our wonderful teachers for donating auction items and our amazing families for their continued support.

The Golf Committee is already looking for donations of goods, experiences, or services to be auctioned off in the Spring and for sponsors to help support the event.  This is a great way for companies to gain exposure to the Great Falls/Vienna communities.  The committee is also looking for golfers to play in the Celebrate Great Falls Golf Tournament, to be held in Spring.  For more information, please contact Lisa Cuomo at lisac0903@gmail.com or 703-967-4629.

Virginia Naturally School Award

It is with great pride that we announce CRES has been awarded the Virginia Naturally Schools award for the third year.  Virginia Naturally Schools is the official environmental education school recognition program for the Commonwealth of Virginia, administered by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, with support from the Department of Education, Department of Environmental Quality and other resource agencies.  This program recognizes the wonderful efforts of many Virginia schools to increase the environmental awareness and stewardship of our youngest citizens.  Colvin Run is one of four schools in FCPS and one of 61 schools in Virginia.

School Safety Drills

Virginia requires all schools to conduct three lockdown drills each school year, two in September and one in January.  Today, our students and staff took part in the first “Lockdown Drill” for September.  Before the drill, students and staff were reminded that it is only a practice drill, and staff remind students regarding what to do during the drill.

A lockdown requires that all students and staff remain in classrooms or other designated secure locations that are away from danger and that minimize access and visibility. Similar procedures would be followed in a real situation.

A real “lockdown” procedure is initiated in the rare event a high risk incident occurs in the school, on school property or in the vicinity of the school that could endanger the safety of the students and staff.  The safety of our students and staff at Colvin Run Elementary School is a top priority, and the drills help ensure that we are able to successfully manage crisis situations at the school.

Virginia requires all schools to perform one fire drill per week for the first 20 days of school and then one fire drill per month after that time.  A Fire Drill requires that all students and staff exit the school in a quick and orderly fashion.  The staff quickly take roll and verify all students have safely exited the building.  Before the drill, students and staff were reminded that it is only a practice drill, and staff remind students regarding what to do during the drill.

Please note that these drills are for practice purposes only.  We are very proud of our students and staff for successful completion of these required Lockdown Drills and Fire Drills.

Costa Rica - 5 Spots Left!

We are in the process of planning our annual trip to Costa Rica, which is offered to 5th and 6th students and their parents.  During this once in a lifetime trip, we explore the beautiful country of Costa Rica, practice our Spanish, and learn about the country’s economy and agriculture. Here is a video of all the fun we had!

We have already started the enrollment process for this year’s trip and we have only 5 spots left!  We want to extend the information regarding the trip in another information meeting on September 25th at 6:30pm in the theater.

For more information about the trip or to RSVP for the meeting, please contact Ms. Seiler at jlseiler@fcps.edu.  We would love to have you join us on this amazing journey!

Band Notes

Welcome to the new school year!  We are up and running in band classes and want to be sure that everyone is prepared to learn!  All students should have their instruments by now and should be bringing both their instrument and band binder to class.

Did you know that Band has a Blackboard page?  Log on to Blackboard, click on CRES Specials, then click on the Band Button.  You will find lots of helpful information about band here including the DRAGON calendar, concert dates and more.  In the event of school delays or cancellations be sure to check the Band Blackboard page for DRAGON calendar changes.

4th Graders Practice STEAM Skills

The first week, 4th grade students in Ms. Pfeffer-Hahn’s class created towers with spaghetti noodles trying to not only build the tallest tower, but also one that could hold a weight of one large marshmallow. They drew their ideas, revised with a partner, built an original model and then tried a second time with their new construction knowledge. In this way they persevered and practiced their STEAM skills.
