2018 Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award
The Board of Education
Distinguished Achievement Award was earned by 15 school districts
and 202 schools that met all state and federal benchmarks and made progress
toward the goals of the Governor and the Board of Education.
“The criteria for these awards
provide short-term and long-term goals for principals, superintendents and
communities as they develop the improvement plans all schools must have under
the Board of Education’s new accreditation standards,” said
Superintendent of Public Instruction James F. Lane.
“Congratulations to the students in these divisions and schools and to the
dedicated educators who made these successes possible.”
This year Fairhill Elementary is a proud award recipient. We are proud of the staff and
students for all of their hard work. Go Tigers!

Salad Bar Set to Come to Fairhill Soon!
We are excited to announce that Fairhill is going to the next
level of providing our students and staff with a healthier lunch! Beginning on October 11, 2018, we
will be implementing the “Real Food for Kids” Salad Bar. All students will be sent home a salad bar lunch menu describing the vegetables, fruits, protein and
grains available on the salad bar, as well as the students’ hot entrée choice. All students will select their fruits and
vegetables for lunch from the salad bar, and then they may complete their lunch
by choosing either the salad bar protein and grains or the hot entrée listed on
the menu for that day. Students will
“practice” salad bar etiquette and new procedures for the lunch line before the
salad bar opens. We are excited that our
students will have so many fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from each day
and look forward to joining many other FCPS schools that have had the
opportunity to implement the salad bar successfully this school year!

Portrait of a Tiger
Meet Ms. Laura Wisotzkey,
School Psychologist
When did you realize you wanted to become a psychologist? What made you want to be a school psychologist in an elementary school?
I was inspired to pursue a career in education by my two
grandmothers and great aunt who were all educators. Their passion for teaching
and helping students was infectious. My career as a school psychologist as
enabled me to combine my love of learning with my desire to help children
thrive in school, at home and in life.
Name something you would like to improve upon.
Healthy eating habits
combined with a consistent exercise routine.
Which school/university did you attend?
I attended Penn State University for undergrad and George
Mason University for graduate school.
What do you think of Fairhill? Why do you think this is the right
school for you?
I worked at Fairhill Elementary School earlier in my career
with Fairfax County Public Schools and was thrilled when I was asked to
return. Fairhill is a very special school community and I am very happy
to be a part of it.
