We kicked off this fundraiser with a Pep Rally for kindergarten - grade 2 and another for grades 3 - 6. The students entered through a tunnel and were welcomed by lively music and chants from our Boosterthon Team. The students had a blast learning about the Fun Run, how to get pledges, and fun prizes they can earn individually and as classes. They are excited for the Fun Run scheduled for next week on Thursday, September 20th.
Throughout the week all grade levels participated in daily team huddles. During each huddle the
Boosterthon Team gave the students challenges and as a result really fun
things have been happening! Ms. Azero's 5th grade class got to eat lunch with the Boosterthon
Team, Ms. Kim's 2nd grade class had a dance party with the team, and today Ms. Penney’s 4th grade class got to
silly string the team!

Everyone at Powell was excited to launch the Positivity Project this past week. The students began to learn about the #OtherPeopleMatter mindset which will be a theme all year long. To learn about this mindset students talked about kindness, being a good friend, and ways they show that people matter.
Second grader Nisreek wrote this (pictured left) after reading a book and recognizing
that #OtherPeopleMatter! Way to go, Nisreek!

Colin Powell Elementary Parking Lot
We
hope to see YOU there!
A digital drop-down tool was created for
parents and the community to learn more about the elementary standards and
benchmarks by grade level and content that is accessible by clicking on the Elementary School Academics on the FCPS public internet.
Once on this page, please select the
grade level you would like to learn more about. Inside the grade-specific page,
you may visit any of the linked pages for an overview of programs of content.
For a deeper dive into a specific content, click on View the ___Grade program of
Studies (POS) button. Within this page, you may click on any subject
(i.e., mathematics, science, etc.) and a drop down by standards and benchmarks
will appear.
An additional
resource for sharing grade and content information by quarter is the quarterly progress report alignments
documents. Because of
the recent changes to the math and language arts standards, currently only Q1
is updated. The remaining quarters will be updated ongoing throughout
this year.
Each week we will spotlight staff
members in the Puma Press, and we will begin with staff members who joined the
Powell family this year. Please help us
welcome these #ProudPumas . . .
Kelly Gabriel, 1st Grade Teacher
Hi! My name is Kelly Gabriel and I am
so excited to be welcomed here into the Colin Powell family! I already love it
here!
I come from another school in FCPS
where I taught Kindergarten and first grade.
I am married and have 2 lovely
children; a son and a daughter. Our family just adopted a sweet black cat named
Toulouse this summer. I love to ride my bike, work in the garden, learn about
history and travel to new countries. You may hear me singing and playing my
guitar around school from time to time as well! I know this school year is
going to be Puma-riffic!!

Avery Bouffard, General Music Teacher
I am so honored to become part of
the Colin Powell Family! I recently graduated from Messiah College with a
degree in music education K-12 with a concentration in guitar studies. I have
created music in a variety of styles including flamenco, classical, jazz, and
even played banjo in the West Shore Symphony. During my time student teaching,
I taught music at an elementary school in Pennsylvania. In addition to teaching
general music classes, I have taught beginner band lessons, chorus, and adapted
music classes. My passion for teaching has really blossomed over the past few
years and I am delighted to begin at Colin Powell.
