Social Media Best Practices for Students

Social media is a powerful platform for engaging students and including them in conversations that affect their ability to thrive in school and life. For more information, click here.

Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES)

The Foreign Language in the Elementary School/Language through Content (FLES/LTC) Program helps students learn a world language through Science and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) integrated content. The program provides language learning opportunities to our students in grades K through 6th.

The goal of FLES/LTC is to develop students’ language proficiency and 21st century skills by teaching World Languages through STEAM, with a strong emphasis on Science. Teachers use Project-Based Learning to help students learn another language while developing skills in all areas. Generally, students receive 60 minutes of language instruction per week. This model supports the five goal areas of the national standards for world language (communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities) and is aligned with the Virginia SOL for World Languages.

New Math Curriculum

We will use a new Math curriculum this school year. We know our teachers shared about it at BTSN, but please feel free to ask them any questions as we benefit from this new resource this year!

ORIGO Stepping Stones (Gr. K-5) offers a unique and comprehensive mathematics curriculum that combines print and digital materials. It builds conceptual understanding through rigorous problem solving activities while also supporting computational fluency with strategies and practice.

Discovery Tech Book (Gr. 6) is a highly engaging, digital math textbook that connects students to math through real-world problems worth solving. Using a balanced approach to instruction, Math Techbook combines conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application to help all students develop a long-lasting mastery of mathematics.

Putting a Face to the Name

Earlier this summer, we shared bio's about our new teachers at Little Run. Each week we will share a picture to help put a face to the name!

Jenni Russell

Meet Jenni Russell, Our New 3rd Grade Teacher

I am so excited to join the Little Run community! I am originally from Michigan, where most of my family still lives. I visit every summer to see my parents, grandparents, brother, and niece. It is hard to live so far away sometimes, but it is wonderful to always have someone to visit. My husband’s family lives in Wisconsin, so we travel there every year, too. I have a 3 year old daughter, Emerson, and she loves to travel to visit our far-away family. I got my teaching degree from the University of Michigan, and I have a special place in my heart for Ann Arbor. I have taught for 15 years in Michigan, The Gambia, Colorado, and Virginia! I loved living in Colorado and being near the mountains where I could hike in the summer and snowboard in the winter. Now that my husband and I live here in Virginia, we love to go to Washington, DC, to visit the museums and explore the city. Emerson loves to go exploring with us, especially when she gets to be outside! Our whole family loves to read, and my favorite genre is science fiction. I love thinking about how things might be some day!
