pta

Come join Principal Kihm and the PTA for the first meeting of the year. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. and will be followed at 9:30 by our guest speaker Riley Barrows  Longfellow's after school specialist. Longfellow's after school programs have more then 40 clubs students can join. Each year about 500 students participate in at least one of these clubs. Come find out all about how your student can take advantage of these free after school programs and why it is beneficial for them to participate. Get all your questions answered as most after school clubs start the week of September 24th.

Our Support Excellence Campaign is our only fundraiser for the year. We hope to raise $60,000 to to fully fund our PTA programs including the school's technology needs. We are asking families to contribute $150 to meet our goal. We recognize this is not possible for every family and any donation is greatly appreciated.

Still a Few PTA Committees in Need of Volunteers

The PTA is in need of a just a few more committee chair volunteers. Please consider volunteering your time for one of these open positions.

Reflections Chair- This is a very easy committee to oversee. Reflections is a program run by the Virginia PTA which encompasses the arts and encourages students to express themselves through different art mediums. You are simply the messenger between the students and the Virginia PTA. It is mostly a fall event and requires minimal time.

International Parents Network Co-Chairs- We have over 70 languages spoken at Longfellow. Our international parents network is vital to building our community here. We are looking for a chair or co-chair to arrange for social opportunities for international families to get together. Typically, the school host a potluck dinner in October to kick off the year. Great way to get to know the diverse community that makes LMS so special.

Heritage Night- Two co-chairs needed to work with Longfellow teachers and students to host a heritage night in early spring. It is a night of cultural celebration with a potluck meal, talent show and so much more. The are many notes and it is an extremely organized event thanks the teachers at LMS.

General Volunteer Pool- Don't have time to commit to being a chair, but want to hear about volunteer opportunities with the PTA. Sign up here to be part of the general volunteer pool. It does not commit you to any event, but you will be contacted first as needs arise.

Please contact Jennifer Von Elm at presidentptalms@gmail.com if interested in one of the openings.

Friday Yogurt Sales

zinga

Send your student with $3 on Fridays in September and October. Zinga yogurt will be for sale at dismissal. This is a fun way to end the week and very popular among the students.

Hospitality Update

hospitality

We are barely into the start of the school year, and the Hospitality Committee has already hosted two wonderful events for our teachers and staff at Longfellow. First, an amazing breakfast buffet was provided for the teachers and staff on their first day back to Longfellow on August 20th.  Second, BBQ and all the fixings were served prior to Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 5th. We would like to say Thank You for all the yummy donations and parent volunteers who made these events so successful. The teachers and staff were very appreciative -- they love all of the homemade treats! The PTA would not be able to host these events without the help and support of the Longfellow community.

Directory Changes This Year

AtoZ

Our 2018-2019 printed and online school directory will be produced again this year by AtoZ School Directories. However, in accordance with new Virginia privacy laws the directory will only include the email addresses of each family and will not include addresses and phone numbers. PTA members not only will receive a free copy of the printed directory, but also access to a secure/password-protected AtoZ directory app. Look for a verification email in early October (after the office staff has processed all student data and pulled any directory opt-out entries).

If you have any questions, please contact the directory team at lms.ptadirectory@gmail.com
