"Weather" or Not to Close FCPS

With Hurricane Florence in the forecast, it's a good idea to review FCPS' weather cancellation procedures. You might also want to familiarize yourself with Regulation 4810, Administrative Leave – Emergency, which outlines all of the different conditions under which emergency administrative leave may be granted. While no operational changes are currently planned, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared!

Recycling Changes in FCPS

You may have heard that changes are coming to recycling in FCPS. These changes are driven by economic conditions in the recycling industry. Here's a look at what's changing for us:

  • Accepted recyclable items will be limited to plastics 1 and 2, cardboard, white paper, and aluminum and tin cans.
  • Cardboard cafeteria trays are no longer being accepted for recycling due to stricter rules about acceptable contamination levels of recyclables.
  • New recycling posters are being designed and will be sent to schools as soon as they are printed.
  • The Get2Green website will reflect these changes and serve as a resource for answering your questions.

Please contact recycling@fcps.edu with questions.

#OurFCPS Faces: Delores "Dee" Herndon

Delores "Dee" Herndon, equity and employee relations specialist

Delores “Dee” Herndon began working for FCPS 24 years ago as an administrative assistant to the coordinator of what used to be the Parenting Education Center. She later became a professional development specialist in the former Department of Professional Learning and Accountability. For the past four years, Dee has supported employees as an Equity and Employee Relations (EER) specialist in the Department of Human Resources. She implements performance evaluation systems for FCPS personnel and advises administrators and program managers on matters of regulations and procedures that affect employee performance and discipline, as well as its documentation. Dee also provides mediation services and technical assistance to administrators and program managers on matters of fair employment practices.

Dee’s philosophy is truly customer driven. “I believe the support I provide in EER to our employees [by] ensuring that FCPS, state, and federal regulations and policies are followed in an accurate, fair, and equitable manner is most rewarding for me.” In an FCPS Cares submission, Lake Braddock SS Associate Principal Laura Waterman said, "Dee is the consummate professional and such a caring individual. She was able to assist me when discussing a concern with detailed, quick, and accurate information. [...] Thank you for all that you do!!"

Outside of FCPS, Dee likes spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys jazz concerts, local festivals and exhibits, and occasional shopping trips to New York City. Thanks, Dee, for helping to cultivate a culture of equity and fairness for all FCPS employees!
