WTW National Merit Semifinalists

Six Woodson seniors were named National Merit semifinalists for 2019.  All semifinalists are eligible to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarship awards worth $31 million, to be awarded in spring 2019.

Congratulations to Daniel Braun, Jason Gallo, Kenny Huang, Joy Kim, Anne Lee, and Rory McAlevy.


Parking Permits

The Safety & Security Team will begin enforcing parking lot violations on Friday, September 21st.  Parking permits can be purchased online and picked up from Room E116.  The cost for a permit is $200.00 for the school year.

Alums Visiting WTW

Cavalier alumnae are always welcome to visit WTW outside of school hours.

If an alum wants to visit with a teacher during the school day, they must have a documented, pre-arranged appointment time and all visitors must check into the Main Office to receive a visitor's badge.


Tech Tip for Parents

Naviance Student

Naviance Student is the new version of Family Connection.  This mobile accessible experience will help students answer the questions that will shape their future. Who am I? What do I want to be? How will I get there? and How Will I Succeed? It is easy to use with familiar layouts and workflows.

Naviance Student, just like Family Connection, is accessible to both students and parents. Students will continue to access Naviance Student via their FCPS 24-7 learning site and parents can view their student’s account as it is a part of the FCPS 24-7 Learning: Parent View.

AP Bio

Students in Ms. Forney’s AP Biology class learn about cell diffusion in a hands-on lab.


Powderpuff

The annual Powderpuff girls football game will take place on Friday, September 28th at 6:00 p.m. on the main field.  Admission is free with a student ID.  General admission is $5.00 at the gate.  Concessions will be sold during the game.

Girls play in grade-level teams of 8 and are coached by student boys.  Senior teams play Juniors, and Sophomore teams play Freshman.

This year's theme is "Spy" which is also the Homecoming Dance theme.  Each class wears their team's theme color.  This year's colors are as follows:

Seniors are black, Juniors are pink, Sophomores are purple, and Freshman are light orange.

Student participants - all forms are due by Monday, September 17th by 3:15 p.m. to your sponsors.  Forms are available outside of Room A133.

Cav Hack Logo

CavHack

Registration is open for Cav Hack:  A Woodson Hackathon!  This event is taking place in Woodson's Cav Hall on Saturday, September 29th from 8:00a.m. until 8:00p.m. 

At CavHack, students will have an amazing and free opportunity to learn coding and explore application development.

This program is for students from a variety of technological backgrounds, especially for girls who may feel under-represented in this field. Having basic knowledge of computer science will help students tremendously later on as technology is gaining influence in numerous careers.

World Languages Credit Exam

The 2018 Credit Exam for World Languages will be administered November 6th, 7th and 8th.

Twenty-nine languages will be included:  American Sign Language, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali/Bangla, Chinese/Mandarin, Farsi/Persian, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Nepali, Pashto, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit/Samskritam, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog/Pilipino, Tamil, Telugu, Tigrinia, Turkish, Twi, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Registration opens Monday, September 10th at 8:00 a.m. and closes on Wednesday, October 10th at 4:00 p.m.  Late registrations will not be accepted.

For Greek, Portuguese and Turkish exams, contact your school counselor because an additional form must be completed in order to register.

College Financial Aid Night

Parents will have the opportunity to learn about paying for college from a college financial aid officer on Wednesday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium.  You will learn what is required and how the information you provide is interpreted. 

Be prepared and informed!!  Spanish translation will be available.

2018 FCPS College Fair and College Night Events  

Fairfax County Public Schools high school students and their families are encouraged to attend the 2018 College Fair on Sunday, October 14th at Fair Oaks Mall from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m., and College Night on Monday, October 15th at Hayfield Secondary School (7:00 – 9:00 p.m.).

College Fair and College Night provide opportunities for college-bound students and their families to gather information from a variety of schools. Approximately 300 colleges and universities are represented, including two- and four-year colleges and military academies.

W.T. Woodson car magnets are now available for purchase.  These magnets are 5 3/4" in diameter and can be purchased on MySchoolBucks and then picked up in the Main Office.

FCPS to Host Annual Mental Health and Wellness Conference

Registration is now open for the 5th annual FCPS Mental Health and Wellness Conference

For the first time, the conference will also include an Our Minds Matter Teen Summit for middle and high school students, sponsored by the Josh Anderson Foundation.

The free event will be held on Saturday, September 29th, at Fairfax HS, from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m.  Dr. Brabrand will open the conference, and Dr. Amy Przeworski, associate professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, will present the keynote message: Using Stress to Your Advantage in Achieving Academic Success and Emotional Well Being.

Attendees will be able to choose from 35 breakout sessions. Additionally, there will be over 50 resource tables representing public and private agencies who provide wellness-related services within our schools and community. Visit the Mental Health and Wellness Conference page for more information.
