Principal's Note

Parents,

It has been great visiting our STEAM lab thus far seeing the level of interaction among the students. Mrs. Collins, STEAM Resource Teacher has been collaborating with our Advanced Academics Teacher, Mrs. Seiler to plan hands on lessons that allow the students to tap into their creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills. This is so exciting!

Read below to build your background knowledge about STEAM at Sleepy Hollow.

WHO is INVOLVED?

Sleepy Hollow students in grades 1-5

WHAT is STEAM?

STEAM classes give students opportunities to use problem solving strategies and learn to be critical and creative thinkers. All lessons engage students in hands-on activities with a focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

WHEN is STEAM?

Twice per month with Ms. Collins

WHY?

STEAM classes are fun and interactive experiences allowing for student inquiry, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. The classes promote risk-taking and prepare students with 21st century skills.

HOW?

Using a variety of materials, many reused and recycled household items, students use the Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve) to construct new products or solve everyday problems.

Thank you,
Eric T. Johnson
Principal

Strategies Help Your Children Stay Organized

The beginning of school poses it's own challenges, finding ways to organize will help.  Here are some ideas to help:

Label belongings with your child’s name, even shoes. Lots of clothes look alike. Labeling helps ensure that the jacket that goes to school in the morning comes home in the afternoon. To involve your child, buy a pre-printed rubber stamp with their name and address on it. Let them stamp their name on  belongings.

Create a family calendar. When a note comes home about a field trip, write it on the calendar. Add sports schedules and other family events. Have your child add test dates and project due dates. Help them get in the habit of checking the calendar each morning. They'll be more aware of what has to happen and when.

Ms. Madison Diaz Second Grade Teacher

I am so excited to be a 2nd grade teacher at Sleepy Hollow ES! I’m looking forward to a fantastic year!

Five years ago, I am moved from South Florida to Fairfax, Virginia for college where I received my undergraduate and master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University. Last year, I student-taught in a 3rd grade class within the Falls Church area and study abroad last fall teaching 1st graders in Cambridge, England.

Some of my interests include taking care of my two kittens, seeking out new restaurants, reading and most importantly, teaching!
