Cameron Elementary School Updates

Librarian Annette Lanier instructs students to find a partner by finding the classmate with the nearest-matching pair of shoes. Such activities help build community and encourage students to meet new friends in the first days of school.

Dates to Remember

    • Tuesday, September 18, 7:00 p.m. - PTA Meeting
    • Wednesday, September 19 - Students released three hours early (1:05)

2 absences per month x 9 months of school equals less likely to graduate

    Attendance Matters

    • Attendance matters as early as kindergarten. Studies show many children who miss too many days in kindergarten and first grade can struggle academically in later years. They often have trouble mastering reading by the end of third grade.
    • Your children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year or about 18 days. That can be just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it.

    Bus Delay Notification System

Stay up-to-date on school bus arrivals with FCPS' bus delay notification system. This system provides parents with timely notification of late bus route information. Access it directly online. Morning bus route information will be available until noon. The afternoon bus route information will be available from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

E-Notify (BlackboardConnect) email messages will also be sent to announce bus delays.

Need assistance or have questions? Visit the FCPS Transportation page for more information.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals Application Available Online

Free and reduced-price meal applications may be completed online or by submitting a handwritten, paper application for the 2018-19 school year. Electronic meal applications are quick, easy, and available in the following languages: English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Filipino, French, and Vietnamese.

Both the online application and paper application now include a designated section with the consent to share information for other programs. This update allows parents and guardians to complete the free and reduced-price meal application and the consent to share information in the same document.

Paper applications must be the original red print forms, which are available at school offices, school cafeterias, and other FCPS buildings. Copied application forms cannot be accepted.

More information is available on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals web page.

    Staff Spotlight: Annette Lanier

Ms. Lanier is the librarian for Cameron, and also in charge of our morning news show!

Although this is her fourth year as a librarian, she is always revamping her lessons in order for students to be challenged while having fun in the library. She says, "If you hear us making noise, don't be alarmed - we are just trying something new and stepping out of our comfort zone!"

What most people don't know about Ms. Lanier is that she was a special education teacher for 14 years prior to receiving her second masters degree in library education. This summer, for the first time, she took time off to be with family and connect with friends.
