 Welcoming students at Chantilly HS
From the Principal's Desk
A Great First Week And The
Road Ahead For 2018-2019
This is the first edition of From
the Principal’s Desk, my weekly message to the community when school is in
session. Rather than send a lot of separate emails, we try to consolidate
important news, information, and recognitions into a single message that goes
out on Friday afternoons. It features Recent Student Successes, our
weekly student recognition program that highlights students demonstrating
growth in academics, behavior or citizenship. Every department in the school
nominates deserving students, and I award certificates in person to each week’s nominees. We plan to start Recent Student Successes in two weeks.
Overall, the start of school
has gone smoothly. As mentioned in my welcome back message, our theme for
the 2018-2019 School Year is Connect, Engage, and Inspire. I
developed this theme after filming a number of Chantilly HS alumni as part of
my welcome back message to staff. Alumni from various backgrounds that
experienced the many programs offered at Chantilly HS were invited to share
their recollections by answering two questions: 1)Please state your name, what
year you graduated, and what you are doing now, and 2) When you reflect about
your time at Chantilly High School, are there some staff members that you
believe made a positive difference in your life? If so, please share who comes
to mind, what they did, and how they made a positive impact on you. Students
Mitchell Davis and Kat Sharma helped me put together an outstanding video that
some parents have asked me to share: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO2T4AeWs1c
As you will see in the sentiments that are
expressed, all of the educators mentioned in the video excel at connecting
with students, engaging them in course content, and inspiring
them to make the most of their abilities. The stories they share are testaments
to the many outstanding people that work at Chantilly and reflect the
character, growth, and resilience of the students we are so fortunate to serve.
If there is anything that we
can do to better help set up your son or daughter for success at Chantilly HS,
please don’t hesitate to contact us. I look forward to a terrific 2018-2019
School Year!

Support ASHA-JYOTHI 5K Run and Help Students in Need
We are pleased to share that we are partnering with a non-profit
named Asha-Jyothi (https://www.asha-jyothi.org/
) to sponsor an annual 5K Run/Walk on September 16th at Fairfax Corner at
8 a.m. All proceeds that we raise will go towards NICE (Needy Illiterate
Children Education), an initiative designed to liberate and educate children
subjected to child labor in India and Asha-Jyothi has generously agreed to
provide a matching grant of 50% of what we raise! To sign up,
participating students and/or their families just need to go to the following
page on the Asha-Jyothi website: https://www.asha-jyothi.org/5K-registration-form/?event_id=8135.
A discounted price of $10 (regular price $25) will be given to students from
Chantilly High School. Thanks for your support!
Some Delays with Locker Assignments
Due to our large enrollment for 2018-2019, we do not have
enough lockers this year to provide one for each and every student. We do not
expect this shortage to cause any problems, however, as many upperclassmen do
not want or use a locker at school (for whatever reason, locker use has been in
continual decline in recent years). As a result of this trend, we have
decided to issue lockers only to 9th and 10th grade students. They were
supposed to receive their assigned locker yesterday (Thursday) during 1st
period but this did not happen for a number of students. If your 9th or 10th
grade son or daughter did not receive their locker, they will receive it during
1st period on Tuesday. We apologize for any inconvenience and shared this same
information with students during the morning announcements. If a junior or a
senior wants a locker, they are asked to request one via a Google document that
is posted on their grade level Google Classroom account. Once student
requests are submitted, juniors and seniors are asked to go to their subschool
to pick up their locker assignment.
Zachary Winfrey named Assistant Principal
Zack will be serving students in Sub School 2. Zack taught art at the middle and high school level for the last 10 years. As a four-year NCAA student-athlete, he earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree from James Madison University in Painting and Drawing with a minor in Art Education. He went on to complete a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He began his teaching career at Hampton High School in his hometown of Hampton, Virginia. He spent two years teaching in York County, Virginia, before coming to Chantilly High School. He also served as a high school head wrestling coach for 8 years. This will be Zack’s 8th year at Chantilly High School. Since August of 2015, Zack has worked closely with Chantilly’s administrative team serving as Interim Assistant Principal during the 2017-2018 school year. He was also an Administrative Intern for Fairfax County’s Institute for the Arts, Tech Adventure Camp, and STEAM Camp at Lake Braddock Secondary during the summer of 2016. Zack resides in Falls Church with his wife, Lauren, and his 7-month old son, Hudson. We welcome Zack into his new position!
Back-to-School Night, Thursday, September 6
On Thursday, September 6, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m.,
we will host our annual Back-to-School Night at Chantilly High School. We
encourage you to arrive early and address a number of things of interest to
most of you (purchase a school yearbook, buy some Chantilly SWAG, etc.) A
parent letter will be distributed through 8th period on Wednesday,
September 5th and students will be directed to add their schedule to
the bottom of the letter. Parents/Guardians can also access schedules through
ParentVue. Classroom visits will begin at 6:30 p.m. with your child’s first
period class. You will follow your students schedule in the A-day (1st,
5th, 7th) and B-day (2nd, 4th, 6th,
8th) order. This will allow you to experience their classes in
the order that they do every other day. Due to limited parking on campus,
shuttle buses will run from Rocky Run and Franklin Middle Schools beginning at
5:30 p.m. Parents are urged to take advantage of the shuttle
buses. Attempting to park on the campus of Chantilly High School after 6
p.m. will be a challenge.
We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 6.
