Stay informed about Irving Middle School!

We have over 1090 students enrolled this year and we want every family to be informed of our important information. The News You Choose is the way we will communicate with families weekly. Please be sure to tell your Irving parent friends that our newsletter is sent every Thursday and if they are not receiving it they should check the Spam Folder in their email account or check to make sure they selected to receive the Irving News You Choose Newsletter. We send the News You Choose to over 2,000 email addresses and we average a click rate of only about 13% - please help us spread the word - the Irving Middle School, News You Choose is a must read for all the most up-to-date information. Our goal is to get a click rate of 35% by the end of the school year!

Learn and Earn has CHANGED to Learning Seminar

To provide more structure, accountability, and opportunities for students we have changed Learn and Earn to Learning Seminar. We will still offer academic support and activities, the difference is students will always report to their Learning Seminar. Teachers will organize activities, academic support, and enrichment opportunities that meet the needs of the students on their Team. We will have two Open Fridays a month where all students will be able to go to free choice locations. By making this change we also build stronger teams who will work together in a variety of ways throughout the school year.

Food for Neighbors - Red Bag Program

Food For Neighbors is an all-volunteer organization committed to helping local teens struggling with hunger. Last year, we were able to provide over 1500 weekend snack packs for Springfield area middle and high school students. If your student needs a snack pack (soup/pasta, crackers, granola bar, oatmeal, fruit snack and milk/juice) for the weekend, please email Meg Gollinger at magollinger@fcps.edu. There are several ways you can help with this organization:

With your support, we can reach even more students in need. Participation is as simple as filling a Food For Neighbors Red Bag once every other month and putting it on your porch on our pick up days. We provide the bags, a desired food list, and pick-up date reminder texts. The next Red Bag food pick up is on Saturday, September 8! If you would like to donate food, please register as a Red Bag Donor today at: https://www.foodforneighbors.org/red-bag-program/

We currently need more Drivers in our area to help pick up the Red Bags once every 2 months. If you can help with this 2 hour commitment on a Saturday morning every other month, please sign up here and select “Driving”: https://www.foodforneighbors.org/get-involved/volunteer/

We also need help on the same morning Sorting the food at Irving that is collected. If you’d like to volunteer to help with that, then please sign up by using the same link but select “Sorting”.

If you can’t make it that morning, but would like to donate drinks or snacks, please sign up here.

The final set of volunteers we are requesting would support behind the scenes. We need someone to help deliver the red bags when someone signs up to donate. If you would like to help with this task, please email Meg Gollinger at magollinger@fcps.edu.

Finally, we need someone to coordinate the sorting event every other month. Please email Meg Gollinger if you are interested in this role.

Thanks for helping us provide food to students who need that extra support!

Driving to Irving Middle School

If you drive your child to school and/or pick up your child, please pack your patience. The first week does involve long lines in the Kiss and Ride. Please remember we have students and staff walking in our parking lots and across our cross walks. To ensure EVERYONE arrives and leaves safely, please drive slow, stay off phones, be alert and be patient. Once the routine sets in, we will have smooth sailing for the year – thanks to your help and patience!

Network Password Recovery Service for Students

Students are eligible for the FCPS network password recovery service available at: https://itweb.fcps.edu/accountrecovery/index.cfm  As the end of the school year approaches, teachers will be encouraging students to register for this service, which might save considerable time should their network password be forgotten over the summer.  Any information used for a recovery option will remain private.  Students may register for this service by either accessing the link above or by following the directions below:

Go to the FCPS main website and search for “password”

Click the first result “Password Management - Forgot or Need to Change Your Password?”

Select Students > Manage your recovery options
