McLean HS: Monthly McMentionables

McLean's Monthly McMentionables

At McLean High School, our students and staff are quite accomplished in and out of the classroom.  At the end of every month, we will share the areas in which students and staff demonstrate the attributes of Portrait of a Graduate (POG).  The qualities of a Portrait of a Graduate are being a communicator, a collaborator, an ethical and global citizen, a creative and critical thinker, and a goal-directed and resilient individual.  Here is the link to read more about Portrait of a Graduate - https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/portrait-graduate

While we know about many of our students' successes, please feel free to send us information to share with the community.  Just write up a brief description of the student's accomplishment - attaching a picture would be helpful.  Send all correspondences to Cara Nolasco-Guzman - clnolascoguz@fcps.edu or to Ellen Reilly - ereilly@fcps.edu.

Thanks to an Awesome Group of Custodians!

McLean's custodians did an incredible job preparing for the opening of the school year.  Over the summer, two of our custodians received promotions and moved to their new schools.  Our newly hired custodians did not begin working at McLean until the middle of August.  This amazing group of people worked above and beyond to ensure that classrooms were ready to welcome our students.

Virginia Girls State

Within the Commonwealth of Virginia, for one week each year, a new state comes into being. The physical boundaries of this “state within a state” are the limits of a college campus, but there are no limits to its usefulness in promoting real-life citizenship in Virginia.

Virginia Girls State provides participants an opportunity to learn, in a few days, the mechanics, objectives, and ideals of democracy. “Learning by doing” is the keynote to the success of this program.

McLean's participants stated that their experience was empowering, challenging, and inspiring.

Virginia Boys State

American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. A participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state government, Boys State was founded in 1935 to counter the socialism-inspired Young Pioneer Camps.

At Boys State, participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs.

The three boys from McLean enjoyed the process of the caucus.

The Journalism Education Association's Medal of Merit is Awarded to Meghan Percival

On Thursday, August 23, the Journalism Education Association announced that Meghan Percival, yearbook adviser at McLean High School, will be one of our recipients of JEA’s Medal of Merit, which is given to JEA members who have made significant contributions throughout their career to scholastic journalism.

Beginning her 20th year as the yearbook adviser at McLean, nominators agree that Percival is not about personal recognition, but rather students (her own and countless others around the country), helping other advisers, and improving scholastic journalism. “In addition to bringing her staffs to conventions and serving on local committees for several D.C. conventions, she has accepted the role of local chair for the upcoming convention there — all without fanfare because that’s who she is,” nominator Ann Akers, MJE, said. Percival has also found the time to help lead on the board for Virginia Association of Journalism Teachers and Advisers and on the NSPA board. “When Meghan is on a committee, she works hard and provides insightful commentary throughout the process,” Mary Kay Downes, MJE, said. “She can always be counted on to contribute. Her contributions benefit advisers and staffs locally and nationwide. She is a consistent speaker, author, judge and more.” (adapted from JEA press release)

JEA will recognize the four Medal of Merit award recipients on November 3 at the national convention in Chicago.
