Kiss and Ride/Student Drop Off

Very Important - If you will be driving your student to school, please be aware that the student drop off is on the Stadium side/door 4 ONLY.  Please arrive early if you are driving your student to school. The building opens at 7:30am. Parents are asked to pull up through the coned area to limit traffic back-up onto South Lakes Drive. Please only drop off students on the stadium side/door 4.  The flagpole/door 1 side is reserved for busses/staff traffic and parking. Upon exiting the stadium lot you will only be able to make a right turn. The neighborhood across from school, Tanbark Drive, is not meant to be a cut through.

Students who will ride the TJ bus, can be dropped off in the bus lane on the Flagpole side/door 1 until 7:30am.  This bus lane is for busses only from 7:30am until 8:15am and 2:20pm to 3:15pm. The bus lane is for ONE-WAY traffic at all times.  Seahawk Drive is two-way traffic. Please observe all posted traffic signage to ensure the safety and security of our students, staff and visitors.

Staff and Visitor Parking

Staff have assigned parking spaces in the lot on door #1 side as well as along Seahawk Drive. No one but staff should be using these spaces for any reason from 7AM to 3PM.   If you have business at the school in the morning or during the day, please use the designated visitor parking spaces in the parking lot marked “Visitor”.

Again, student drop off is on the stadium side/door #4 so there should be no need to pull into a reserved spot.

Parking Permits

Students who applied for a parking permit were notified on Wednesday, 8/22. Parking permits are available for pick up on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Security Office, Room 330, between 8:30am-3:30pm. Parking pass enforcement will begin on Thursday, 8/30.   More parking spaces are available for junior and senior students.  Students may apply online at Student Parking Information.

Most neighborhoods around South Lakes have reserved spaces for their residents. They will ticket and/or tow cars parked in their spaces during the day.

Academy Shuttles

Those students who will be riding a FCPS shuttle to academy classes at other schools should get their bus outside door #1.  The early morning shuttle typically leaves right about 8:10 so make sure you are out at door #1 on time.

South Lakes/Ride Heights Bike Lanes

New bike lanes have been put in place along South Lakes Drive between Twin Branches and Ridge Heights and between Soapstone and Colts Neck.  Please pay extra attention when driving next to the bike lanes which are designed to improve cyclist’s safety. Drivers should not veer into the bike lanes at any time and should be exercise caution when driving next to a person on a bicycle. NOTE: As of this morning there were no markings / signs indicating the new lanes are designated for cyclist. The volume of traffic was noticeable this morning.

In our efforts to understand the impact of the new lanes, we received the information below from FCDOT. If you have questions, comments or concerns please contact the county and/or VDOT.

South Reston Information

Ridge Heights Road

To address speeding concerns and facilitate safer pedestrian crossings, FCDOT and VDOT proposed adding bike lanes. On-street parking will be maintained on both sides. Extra wide parking lanes will be provided for school bus parking.

South Lakes Drive

In response to road safety concerns along the South Lakes Drive corridor, FCDOT and VDOT proposed a road redesign between Reston Parkway and Sunrise Valley Drive. Safety concerns include speeding, limited sight distance for vehicles turning onto Sunrise Valley Drive, above-average pedestrian volumes and pedestrian crossings, disconnected sidewalks, and no safe and convenient South Reston east-west bike route. South Lakes Drive has comparatively low traffic volumes and is not expected to see significant vehicular volume increases despite development in Reston.

Where feasible, FCDOT and VDOT propose to maintain one travel lane in each direction and to convert the outside travel lane to a buffered bike lane, which has shown to be an effective safety improvement for people that are driving, biking and walking. The current lane configuration will be maintained approaching all signalized intersections and the South Lakes High School Kiss & Ride. Buses will continue to stop at the curb to serve passengers. Additionally, FCDOT and VDOT propose to extend the bike lanes on South Lakes Drive between Reston Parkway and Sanibel Drive. On-street parking will be maintained on both sides.
