Principal's Message

Dear Edison Families,

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year!  I hope you enjoyed a summer filled with fun and exciting memories with family and friends.  Personally, I am grateful to continue this journey with you as your Principal.  At the beginning of each school year, I still feel the same excitement and enthusiasm to have the opportunity to nurture and shape our students and marvel at the development and growth that we see each year.  Over the years, I have had a chance to meet many of you and your children, and look forward to continuing to build a strong relationship between the school and families.

Last week our dedicated and talented teachers returned and began preparing to greet students on the first day.  We reviewed the successes of last school year but also noted areas for improvement.  We aim to help every child reach their potential and to support and challenge every child appropriately.  At Edison, we believe in having high standards for excellent work and know that students can achieve at high levels when we set high expectations and at the same time support and encourage them.  Our teachers participated in a variety of professional development sessions and trainings in order for us implement best practices in the classroom for teaching and learning.

So at Edison, we believe that students can and will learn through work and effort and expect mistakes and failures; it is a part of the learning process.  We ask students, “What can you learn from this? What will you do next time?”  This growth mindset is not just for students, but every person in this building should always be growing and learning.  Despite obstacles that may arise, we must always believe in our ability to rise above challenges and come out stronger on the other end.

As partners with us,  parents play a role in making this educational experience positive and productive for their child.  Talk with your child, listen carefully to your child, ask questions, be available, and contact the school with any concerns.  Teenagers still need guidance and support.  Make sure your child attends schools regularly, stays after school when he/she needs help, and please monitor and limit their use of social media.

Also, find ways to engage yourself in Edison life.  Join a parent committee, volunteer (once or several times), and come watch the games and the performances.  Make the educational experience at Edison “a way of life,” not just the place where you “send” your child.  Also school is different than when you went to school.  There is the focus on the development of “21st century learning” and all the opportunities to learn in new and exciting ways.  Your child will learn to collaborate, communicate, think creatively and critically, and these skills will ultimately be the key to their future success.

I look forward to another great year in which our partnership of caring, challenging and supporting, nurturing and mentoring, will ultimately benefit our Edison students, making them better students, better community members, and better world citizens.

Sincerely,

Pamela Ellison Brumfield

Principal
