Congratulations to Meg Gollinger!  She is the FCPS Director of Student Services of the 2017-18 year!

Greetings, Irving Families!

We hope you are enjoying time with family and friends this summer. We are planning for the start of the school year and look forward to welcoming our students on the first day of school, Tuesday, August 28! This is the first of our messages which will be delivered via email every week. In this newsletter, you will find everything you need to prepare for the start of the school year as well as important dates. Please note that this document includes many hyperlinks that will connect you to the forms or information you need to start the school year.  Please continue to check our website for important updates and information.

One of the most important upcoming dates is our Open House on Thursday, August 23, from 1:00-6:00 p.m. At the Open House, parents will have the opportunity to complete/turn in the beginning of year required forms which will allow students to pick up their schedule and locker assignment. Students are able to decorate the inside of their lockers if they wish and store school supplies.  If families are unable to attend the Open House, students can pick up this information on the first day of school, August 28, 2018.

In order to ensure we have the correct list of classes for every student, we sent mock schedules to all families who were registered by the middle of June. If your child attended one of our feeder elementary schools or was registered by mid-June and you did not receive a mock schedule, please contact Hang Nguyen at hbnguyen@fcps.edu or 703-912-4535.

We are excited to welcome you to the 2018-19 school year and look forward to making your child’s middle school experience a successful one. A reminder if your child has not completed the summer assignment for Math and read 3 books, please click HERE to access the Math packet for your child’s 2018-19 Math class.

See you in a couple of weeks!

Sincerely,

Cindy Conley

Principal

        New Student Orientation (students only)

The Orientation for ALL seventh graders and eighth graders new to Irving is Monday, August 27, 2018.  Bus transportation will be provided (for those who live outside the walking boundary) and bus schedules for the orientation will be posted in the Main Office Windows the week of August 20.  Please note the bus schedule for the Orientation is an abbreviated schedule and will not be the same as the schedule for the school year.  Students who walk to school should plan to arrive at Irving by 7:25 a.m. The orientation will begin at 7:30 a.m.  The program will end at 9:50 a.m. with bus departures by 10:00 a.m.   During this time, students will briefly rotate through each class, meeting their teams and teachers.  Students should bring their schedules with them to the orientation, but do not need any other school materials.  Students who did not pick up their schedules at the Open House should report to the Student Services Office to get their schedule.

        Regular Bus Schedules

Bus schedules for the 2018-19 school year are being mailed out.  We will also have copies in the Main Office for parents who require a paper copy of the bus schedule. Please remember the first few weeks of school can be very hectic as morning routines are re-established, so students should allow adequate time to catch the bus. Please make every effort to arrive to your bus stop early these first few days.  Drivers will often need to get their routes down and make necessary adjustments to schedules to arrive at school on time, so students are encouraged to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled arrival time. This will help alleviate the stress of students missing the bus.

        Morning Announcements

We have found that our students are in their first period classes by 7:25 or earlier. To help maximize class time First Period, we will begin our morning announcements (which include the Moment of Silence and the Pledge of Allegiance) at 7:25 a.m. so class can begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. Our warning bell will now ring at 7:20 a.m. signifying students need to go to their First Period class.

        Securing Bikes

If your child rides a bike to school, please ask them to secure their bike to one of the two bike racks in front of the school.
