2018-2019 Back To School Updates

Principal's Letter

 Dear Waynewood Owls,

On behalf of the entire staff at Waynewood Elementary School, we would like to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year!  We cannot wait to hear all about your summer adventures.  We have been busy working to ensure that we are prepared for another amazing school year. We are so excited to welcome the returning students back into our school, as well as meet all of our newest owls.

Waynewood’s wonderful teaching staff and support personnel want to ensure that every child is successful.  Our goal is to support and encourage each child to achieve their full potential by instilling in them an intrinsic sense of self-worth, curiosity, and a love of learning.  If there is something going on that may impact your child’s success or focus during the school day, please communicate this to your child’s teacher, the school counselor, an administrator, or any other staff member.  We are all here to support you and your student in the pursuit of excellence.

Being actively involved in your child’s education is essential in developing a strong partnership between home and school.  We have many volunteer opportunities available, and we hope to see a lot of you throughout the school year!   We are a school where everyone shares in the responsibility for the success of every one of our students.  We have a wonderful PTA here at Waynewood, and we would encourage everyone to be a part of this organization. Our first PTA meeting will be on Tuesday, September 4, 2018.  PTA meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm in the Waynewood Cafeteria.

This year, we will communicate information to you in a variety of ways.  We use the News You Choose system for our weekly message from the principal.  If you have not already done so, you will need to opt in to this system to continue to receive these newsletters.  You can opt in at https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/VAEDUFCPS/subscriber/new.   Today’s newsletter was also sent through the Keep-in-Touch system so that it reaches those who have not yet registered for News You Choose.  We often post photos on Twitter (@waynewoodes) and Facebook.  We will continue to use Wednesday folders for flyers and other important information as well.

Please see below for important information and updates.  This is going to be an exciting year of learning and growing together.  See you at Open House!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine

Open House

Open House will be on Monday, August 27.  The schedule for Open House is:

        Kindergarten

        9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

        Grades 1-6

        11:00 am -12:00 pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to meet their new teacher and see their classroom.

Class lists for students in Grades K-3 will be posted in the cafeteria.  Students in Grade 4 can proceed to the Owl’s Nest to see their class lists.  Students in Grades 5 and 6 will find their class lists posted in the gym.   Please note that we may need to relocate the class lists due to Renovation and/or inclement weather (4th grade).  If this is the case, we will send an updated location.

If you ordered supplies through the PTA, you will be able to pick those up during the Open House.  School supply kits will be available for pick up in the gym during Open House.  Stop by the gym before you go to your new classroom so that you can bring your supplies with you!

If you ordered supplies and you are unable to attend Open House, they will be delivered to students’ classrooms.

  • Students with missing immunization requirements must submit those requirements before receiving a teacher assignment. Please remember that all 6th grade students are required to have a TDAP shot record on file in order to be assigned to a teacher.

  • Remember that all students must have updated immunization information on file and a complete registration packet in order to start school on August 28, 2018.
  • Parents of students who do not meet these requirements will be called to pick up their student and keep them home until these requirements are met

Where is the Main Office?

The main office has been temporarily relocated.  To access the main office, please go to Door 2.  Once you have been buzzed in, please go up the small set of steps, and then turn right.  The office is the first door on the right after the student bathrooms.  You must go directly to the office each and every time you enter the building.

To use the handicapped accessible entrance (Door 3) closest to the main office, please follow the signs to the left of Door 2.  Door 3 is an accessible entrance.  Once you enter through Door 3, turn right.  Go to the end of the hall and turn left.  The main office will be on your right, after the student bathrooms.

There is also an accessible entrance located at Door 8 (SACC).

Back to School Night

Back to School Night will be on Thursday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m.  There will be two sessions offered to accommodate families with multiple children.  Back to School Night is a wonderful way for parents to get to know your child’s teacher and learn about the classroom expectations and grade level curriculum.   We hope you will be able to join us!  There will be limited parking available that night, so please consider walking if you are able.  When the doors open for Back to School Night, you may go directly to your child’s classroom.

First Day of School and Beyond

The first day of school is rapidly approaching!   The Waynewood staff will be available to help all students find their room on the first day of school, which is Tuesday, August 28, 2018.  Students need to be in their classroom when the final bell rings at 9:15 a.m.  Students may begin going directly to their classrooms at 9:05 a.m.  Students who wish to buy breakfast may also go the cafeteria when they arrive in the morning.  It is always a good idea to have students arrive at school on the first day the way they will come to school the rest of the year (Walker, Kiss and Ride, or FCPS bus).

Please note that Kindergarten students must be met by an adult in the afternoon at the bus stop.  Kindergarten students will not be allowed to exit the bus without an adult to meet them.  If your kindergarten child is a bus rider, they will have a piece of yellow tape placed on their backpack strap to let everyone know that they are in kindergarten and need to be met by an adult.  Please do not remove this tape, as we use this as a safety precaution.

We take the safety and security of our students very seriously at Waynewood.  FCPS policy requires us to monitor every adult that enters the building.  Because of this, we cannot allow parents to walk their students to classrooms.   We do make one exception to this rule and that is only for our kindergarten parents during the first week of school.   We recognize that this special time is sometimes harder for the parents than it is for the students, and we would not deny you the opportunity to take one last picture during the first week!  We would highly encourage you to let them try it on their own after the first day of school.  Kindergarten parents need to exit the building by 9:20 am so that we can begin to establish our classroom routines.  We appreciate your understanding as to why we are strict about this policy and would be happy to answer any further questions you may have as to the care we take to make sure your children are safe when they are in our care.

Please note that as part of our safety plan, every time that you come to school to volunteer, have lunch, or pick up your child, you are now required to show an ID. Your ID will also be scanned into our computer system.  This also applies to aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. that may come with you for lunch. This is an FCPS policy and we are required by the Office of Safety and Security to enforce it.    We appreciate your help with this, as we all have the safety of our students in mind.

Please keep in mind that the buses are often late to drop students off in the afternoons during the first week of school as drivers adjust to the routes and traffic patterns.  As a late school, we are the last bus run of the day, and delays with earlier bus runs can have a big impact on our buses.

After the first week of school, you will be notified if the buses are running late for any reason through the Keep-in-Touch system.

Renovation Update

The construction crews have been hard at work all summer to ensure that the building will be ready for teachers and students to arrive.   The cafeteria is nearing completion and is larger than our old space.  The new library and art rooms will be ready to go to start the new school year!

The renovation timeline is ever-changing due to weather and unforeseen circumstances.  We will continue to work hard to inform you of changing timelines as we learn them.

A big thank you goes to our custodians, who have gone above and beyond to clean and prepare the building in the midst of the construction.  We really have an amazing crew!

Walkers

There will be two doors for walkers to use to enter and exit the school.  Walkers from Potomac Lane may continue to use Door 8 (the SACC door). Walkers from Waynewood Blvd may use Door 3, which is located around the side of the building near the temporary main entrance (Door 2).  After the first few weeks of school, we will see how the flow of pedestrian traffic is working, and re-evaluate as needed.

Bus Loop and Kiss-and-Ride Procedures

We will continue to use the same system for Kiss-and-Ride for the 2018-2019 school year.   Kiss-and-Ride will be located in the parking lot area.  The loop for Kiss and Ride will use the entire parking lot.  Please follow the signs.  The student drop off area is located by the side of the cafeteria.   Kiss and Ride will begin promptly at 8:55 a.m. Please do not drop students off before 8:55 a.m.  A staff member must be present before Kiss and Ride can begin.

Please note that the back gate (behind the field) will be locked promptly at 9:15 a.m. each morning to ensure the safety of our students (particularly those in the Owl’s Nest) throughout the school day.  Students arriving after that time will need to go to Door 2 and report to the main office.

If you plan to drive your child to school, we ask that you use the official Waynewood Kiss-and-Ride, which is accessed from Waynewood Blvd.  Student safety is always our #1 priority, and we need your help to ensure the safety of your child.
