Oak Hill Staff is #ALLinOHES for a great 2018-2019 school year!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to those families returning to OHES and a huge welcome to
those of you who are new to our school community! By looking at our
student enrollment growth since June, I know we have many new families and we
look forward to getting to know your child(ren) and YOU! Please introduce
yourself to Mr. Credle, Assistant Principal, and me at our Open House on
Monday, August 27! As we think about our first day of school on
Tuesday, August 28, a friendly reminder that families are allowed to walk their
child to class the first day of school. Beginning Wednesday, it’s Kiss
and Go outside the entrances to Oak Hill. We promise you that your
child(ren) will be well taken care of and supervised every step of the
way. We’ve got this so please don’t worry.
Mr. Credle, Mrs. Rock, Mrs.
Young and I had a wonderful time meeting our rising Kindergarten students
last week and sharing a popsicle on the playground. I hope you have followed us on Twitter
@oakhilles, @principaldevore and @cliffcredle and #ALLinOHES. Take a look at the excitement from staff this
week! Mr. Credle and I would like to
take a minute to recognize our wonderful teachers and staff for everything they
have done to prepare for the 2018-19 opening! Our custodians worked very
hard cleaning the building and preparing the grounds and our office support is
the backbone of registering students, ordering supplies for classrooms,
answering questions, preparing first day packets, etc… The staff is
#ALLinOHES and ready to welcome your child.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further
support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill. My door is
always open!
Sincerely,
Holly DeVore, Principal

The first day of school is Tuesday, August 28. Kindergarten parents are permitted to walk their child to class on the first day of school. We ask that parents of children in grades 1-6 say goodbye outside the school doors to allow for an easier transition. If your child will not be starting on the first day, please email the registrar, Vicki Baron, at vjbaron@fcps.edu and let her know the reason and the date your child will begin. |
Kindergarten walkers will meet their parents on the side of school next to the playground and car riders will be escorted to Kiss 'n Ride. Those students riding buses will need to be met by an adult or middle/high school student who calls for the child by name. Any student not met at the bus stop will be returned to school to wait for parent arrival.
A Keep-in-Touch (KIT) email from Oak
Hill will be sent on Friday, August 24th. The body of the email will have
your child’s class placement and the attachment will have important school
information for the 2018-2019 school year.
Transportation will send out communication on August 24th with bus route information. Bus information will also be available on your child’s
Blackboard account.

The Health Room will be open on Monday, August 27th from 9-10:30am and on each Back-to-School night for parents to drop off student medications. Our new Health Room Aid, Juliana Rampersad, will be at Oak Hill to accept the medications. |
Oak Hill Elementary will continue its work into Year 3 of
FCPSOn, a digital transformation of teaching and learning in the Chantilly
Pyramid. This initiative has enabled our students to have equitable access to
technology and our teachers to creatively incorporate the Portrait of a
Graduate skills into everyday work. Students in kindergarten through sixth
grade will each receive a personal device to use for the school year.
Students in grades three through six are expected to take
their device home nightly to complete necessary schoolwork, charge the device
for the next day, and bring it back the following school day. Just like in
previous years, they will be given a carrying case to transport the device
safely. Students will not be able to take their devices home until the SR&R
form has been returned to the school. The SR&R includes an acceptable use
policy for student network access.
Student devices will be distributed by the teacher during
the first few weeks of school. Teachers will be helping students to create and
reset last year’s password, begin ongoing discussions about digital citizenship
and appropriate use and get their online core tool accounts setup.

Parents of all students in 4th,
5th, and 6th grades must complete section one of the Band and Strings Intent
Form even if your child is not playing a band or strings instrument. This
is required information which assists staff with scheduling. For 4th grade strings click here and for 5th/6th grade band and strings click here. Please complete the document by September 4th.
The Oak Hill website has a wealth of information for new and returning families, including supply lists. The Oak Hill website can be accessed here.

Fifth grade AAP students and all 6th grade students will need a TI-30Xa or similar scientific calculator for math. This is in addition to the other items on the school supply list. These calculators will not be sold at school but can be found at Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other stores where school supplies are sold. The price is about $9.00. |

Twice a year we give non-profit groups the
opportunity to send paper flyers home with students. The Fall date is
September 26th and the Spring date is April 10th. These
flyers must relate to the schools’ primary function, the education of
students. If your group wishes to distribute a flyer, the following
disclaimer must be printed on the flyers, “These materials are neither
sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent,
or Oak Hill Elementary School”. Flyers must be delivered to the school,
in 35 groups of 30, by Monday, September 24th for the fall date and
Monday, April 8th, for the spring date.
Schoolkidz kits: The Schoolkidz kits have arrived and will be available in classrooms at Open House. The coordinator is requesting volunteers to help in the distribution of the kits to classrooms on August 24th from 5-8pm. This would be a great way for students to earn service
hours. To volunteer click here.
Science
Olympiad: Virginia Science Olympiad
(VASO) is a non-profit which seeks to engage and challenge students in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics through various levels of team-based
competitive tournaments in Virginia. For more information, please visit their
website here. Third to fifth grade students will be participating in Division A. The
registration opens on
August 27, 2018. The tournament will be in October 2018.
PTA Membership: The PTA needs your support. Please consider becoming a PTA member for the 2018-2019 school year. Click here for more information. We want to give all the programs and events that
our children are looking forward to this year.
Thank you,
