Mrs. Porter and Mr. Gerstner proudly welcome you to the 2018-19 school year!
Dear Floris Families,
We
hope you are enjoying a restful, rejuvenating summer with family and friends.
2018-2019 looks to be another wonderful year at Floris, and we are excited to
kick it off with you! This is first of our Floris Friday Community messages.
Each Friday, throughout the school year, we will share updates and classroom
news.
We
know you are eager to learn who your child’s teacher will be. Student
classroom assignments will be emailed prior to the open house. You will
have the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher at our Open House/Back to
School Event on Thursday, August 23rd. The detailed schedule is
listed below. This is a great time for students and parents to meet staff,
reconnect with school friends, drop-off school supplies, learn about the
curriculum, and tour the building.
To
help ensure a smooth transition into the first weeks of school, here are a few
things to keep in mind:
Visitor Procedures
Ensuring the safety and security of Floris students and staff are
of the utmost importance. Our Visitor Management System requires all
visitors to register each visit in the main office by scanning their driver’s
license. Once the visitor is confirmed, a photo is taken and the visitor’s
badge is issued. This system registers and records all visitors that enter the
school, automatically captures visitor information, photo, and visit history. Please wear the printed badge during
your stay at Floris.
School Hours
Floris
Elementary will begin at 9:00 a.m. and dismiss at 4:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday. We will continue to open our doors at 9:00 a.m., with the expectation
that students are in their classrooms by 9:15 a.m.. Tuesday, August 28th,
is the first day of school.
Medication
If your child needs medication to be administered during the
school year, you may drop it off
in the health room during open house day (August 23rd, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00
p.m.) as well as the first day of school. Students
are not permitted to bring their own medication to school.
Important Forms and Information
On
the first day of school, students will bring home a first day folder containing
materials to be reviewed by parents. Included in the folder is your
personalized Emergency Care Form that must be signed and returned to school
on Wednesday, August 29th. You will also find information on the
Family Life Education (FLE) program, an optional FLE opt-out form and a student
insurance application.
Lunch
Many
students choose to purchase school lunch daily or sporadically. The school lunch
price, including milk is $3.25, and milk and juice are also sold separately.
Lunch may be prepaid in advance with a check made payable to Floris Food
Service. The credit will be applied to your child’s lunch account. You may also
add money to your student’s account by opening an account at www.myschoolbucks.com.
We encourage you to always have
some money on your child’s lunch account in case of forgotten lunches. The
cafeteria manager, Mr. Joel Marques, will be here during our Open House/Back to
School Event, on Thursday, August 23rd, to set up an account for
your child and accept pre-payments. Menus and information about school lunch
may be found on the FCPS website, www.fcps.edu.
School Supplies
A
list of school supplies for each grade can be found on the Floris web site at https://florises.fcps.edu/academics/school-supply-lists . Supplies may be brought to school
during our Open House, or the first day of school.
We look forward to working with you and your child in what we
believe will be a most exciting and successful school year. Please accept our
best wishes for the coming school year. Feel free to call us at 703-561-2900 if
you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Gail
Porter, Principal and Dave Gerstner, Assistant Principal
Priming our cafeteria wall in preparation for our new ocean mural coming in October. Former Floris student and artist, Sarah Bleiweis will work with all students to create an amazing design. Thanks for prepping, Mr. Gerstner, Mr. Covey, and Mr. Porter.
You are invited to our Floris Back to
School Event
Mark your
calendars! We are so excited for you to
join us for this exciting event. On August 23rd, we are combining
our open house and back to school events on the same day. Our students will explore their new
classrooms and meet their teachers, as well as allow our parents to receive a
curricular overview and understand student expectations for the school year. Please note, this event takes the place of
our traditional evening back to school night, with the exception of
kindergarten, which will be from 6:00-7:00pm on September 12th.
