Dear
Families:
It
is with mixed emotions that I write to tell you today that I have been offered
and have accepted the position of principal at Justice High School. I will very
much miss Poe and the wonderful students you have allowed me to work with each
day.
Before
I go I want to highlight the great success our faculty has achieved over my
time at Poe. Our English SOL scores have increased from 63% to 86%. We
moved from “accredited in warning” status to “fully-accredited” status by the
State of Virginia. Today we outperform many FCPS middle schools. We developed a
creative master schedule that is now being duplicated by other middle schools.
We partnered with Virginia Tech and Qualcomm to offer our students a
one-of-a-kind STEAM lab. Our small group instructional model in English and
math is often highlighted as an exemplary model for middle school instruction.
We are so proud of the instructional work our staff has implemented.
Poe’s
PTA is taking flight. I want to encourage every family to join and support
them. Last year the PTA sponsored the staff appreciation luncheon and field day
activities. These were two major undertakings. In addition, we also had parent
volunteers who helped us with setting up our annual book fair and the 8th
grade dance. Thank you to every volunteer that made these events happen.
Our
After-school program is the 2nd largest in FCPS. We could not have
done this without the support of our community partners – Annandale United
Methodist Church, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, and Genesis 12 Christian
Fellowship Church. They provided our students with hot meals two to three times
a week. They also supported us with holiday baskets for our families needing
assistance and a homework club.
It
has been my pleasure in partnering with you and all the other parents,
teachers, and students that have made my four years here such a pleasure.
Best
regards,
Maria
Eck
