Karen Corbett Sanders's Newsletter
Dear Families,
Congratulations to the class of 2018! I had the
pleasure of attending graduation ceremonies at Quander Road, Pulley Career
Center, Adult Detention Center, Key Center, Bryant, Hayfield, Lee, and West
Potomac High Schools. Each one left me
inspired by the students that have worked hard and overcome great challenges to
achieve their goal. I wish each and every student the very best in their
next endeavors, which include pursuing careers in the military, the police and
fire departments, college and gap years. Additionally, I am appreciative
of the dedication and support that the parents, teachers, coaches and mentors
have provided to these students. Thank you.
For those students, teachers and parents that will be returning
to/or enrolling in our schools this fall, please enjoy the summer and take
advantage of the parks, museums and libraries that are available in our
community. Additionally, you may find summer reading and enrichment
resources in the G Suite for Education described below. Have a wonderful
summer.
In
an effort to provide families and staff more time to plan, the School Board
will adopt the 2019-2020 School Calendar on June 28. The proposed
calendar will begin school the week before Labor Day and end classes June 12,
2020. Similar to this year, the calendar allows for a two week winter
break (December 23, 2019 to January 3, 2020), one week spring break (April 6-10, 2020), and the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving
holiday (November 27-29, 2019). I expect there will be proposed amendments regarding
Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
G Suite for Education
G
Suite for Education is available to your student over the summer, as it has
been in the past. All files created by, or shared with, your student will
continue to be available to them.
We encourage you to explore G Suite for Education with your children by logging
in together. We suggest having your student log in to his or her FCPS G Suite
for Education account at home to show you what they are currently working on.
Your student will use his or her network login credentials to access G Suite
for Education. Students in grades 4-12 have the ability to reset their password
using the Account
Recovery service; however recovery options must be set up in advance. Your
student can visit the same link to set up those options.
More information on G Suite
for Education can be found on the FCPS Website.
Summer
is the perfect time to revisit the rules in your household for technology and
media use. The FCPS
Digital Citizenship website has Device
Contracts and Family Media Agreements (K-5,
6-8
and 9-12)
that can help you guide family conversations. Translations of these documents
are available on the FCPS 24-7 ParentVUE Digital Citizenship curriculum tab.
There is also a free
online Digital Citizenship course available for parents and their children
to work through together.
Please join a community discussion with speakers from State and Local levels to hear about:

Child Find is the process of identifying children with potential
special education needs as well as educating the community about child
development and the importance of early intervention. Child Find services are
provided for children ages 20 months through 5 years by the FCPS Early
Childhood Identification and Services (ECID&S) program.
The FCPS ECID&S program staff members serve as liaisons providing
assistance and information to local community preschool, child care, Head
Start, and Family and Early Childhood Education Programs (FECEP). ECID&S
staff members also perform community outreach to increase public awareness of
the importance of early intervention, and to ensure that all members of the
Fairfax County community are able to access Child Find services, if needed.
Child Find screenings are free to children ages 20 months to 5 years old who
are Fairfax County or Fairfax City residents. To determine the early
childhood assessment site to contact please call 571-423-4121. To lean more,
visit the FCPS
website.
