Principal's Message:

Dear Oakton Families,

During the school year, we are so fortunate that our students have daily access to mental health support and services.  Our school counselors, school psychologists, and school social worker are busy each and every day helping students navigate the social/emotional demands of adolescent life.

While summer is a welcome break for most teens, we know that day-to-day stressors can continue and significant events can happen that make it difficult for our students to cope.  We want to make sure that you are aware of the mental health resources that are available to students and families over the summer. The FCPS website has a wealth of information about mental health and resiliency https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/mental-health-and-resiliency  to include information about emergency resources https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/mental-health-resources-and-emergency-services-information

Suicide is currently the second leading cause of death for teens, and the statistics are increasing.  Fortunately, this generation of young people is much more informed and open to talking about mental health.  Efforts are also continuously being made to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, so that students feel comfortable seeking help for friends or themselves.

Please find opportunities to talk with your children about their mood and worries, and discuss healthy coping strategies.  Ask them who their trusted adults are, let them know that you are not afraid to talk about difficult topics. Encourage them to reach out for help when needed.

Sincerely,

Jamie S. Lane, Principal

Renovation Updates

The renovation is now in full swing.  Due to the first phase extending the building in the front, we have moved the memorial that was at the base of the flag poles into storage for the duration of the renovation.  This will prevent any accidental damage to the memorial.  Outside of our office hours, the parking lot will be shut down to include nights and weekends.
