Dear Families,
On Thursday, we celebrated
our 6th graders with their promotion ceremony. We are all
proud of how much our students have grown, and of the young ladies and men that
they have become. A perfect example is the service learning project in
which the students participated, in conjunction with the Touching Hearts
organization. Our students stuffed over 100 backpacks for local foster
children, and in the process, experienced the joy of giving. In addition, funds
raised by our students, went toward the repair of our beloved Clifford
playground equipment. As many of you know, this is a special tribute to the
memory of Kylie Xiu Clifford. As we say goodbye to our 6th graders,
we know each and every one of them has a bright and promising future and we
look forward to hearing about their adventures and successes to come.
Are you looking for ways to keep
students’ minds and bodies active during the otherwise lazy summer days?
Keep in mind, there are many ways in this area to stay active and keep
learning. Take family field trips into DC, down to Luray Caverns, over to
Mount Vernon, or take a hike in the mountains. And, very importantly,
give your children time to just plain old play.
And whatever you do, read,
read, read! Have your children pick out some favorites, even if they want
to reread books they already know. Read with your child and talk about
the stories to increase fluency and deeper thinking. As an incentive, the
public library has a program to encourage children to read. To sign up,
go to http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/srp/ an
online resource that will keep your child reading can be found at MyOn Books.
With this Keep In Touch, we now go to sending summer KITs once or twice per
month. We hope you have a wonderful Independence Day and a fabulous
summer!
Sincerely,
Gail Porter, Principal and
Dave Gerstner, Assistant Principal

Summer Reading
**NOTE: You may need to be signed in to your
FCPS Google account to see these documents. Families new to FCPS will need to
contact the Carson MS Main office for a printed copy of assignments.
This year, Rachel Carson’s “one book” (a book that
every student and teacher reads before the start of the year) is “I Will
Always Write Back” by Caitlin Alifirenka, Liz Welch, and Martin Ganda.
This story is told from two perspectives and is nonfiction. We are excited for
you to read it over the summer!
