CONGRATULATIONS ALISA CHO!

Richmond Peace Education Center-Peace Essay Contest
8th grader, Alisa Cho, won 3rd place in the grade 6-8 category
Each year, the Peace Essay Contest encourages young people to elaborate, clarify, and organize their thoughts about a critical topic related to peace or social justice.  The specific writing prompt changes each year.  By participating, these young writers grow and expand their own views on peace and justice.  The contest is open to any elementary, middle or high school student in Virginia. Prizes are awarded in four grade divisions:  K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

THANK YOU!

Thank you Longfellow PTA for a fabulous Farewell Party for the 8th grade students. Trisha Downey and her committee transformed our building into a beautiful “Neon Wonderland.” Over 400 students were in attendance enjoying a DJ, Bounce House, games, and lots of great food. Thank you so much for all your work on this successful event!

SUMMER READING

Our 2018 Summer Reading @Longfellow site is up and running! This site provides LMS students with information related to summer reading requirements, reading contests, and recommended reading lists.

SUMMER LUNCHES AND BREAKFAST

FYI - Summer break is upon us and the school breakfast and lunches won’t be available for students on free/reduced lunches. If you have a school-aged student in need of breakfast and lunch this summer, simply text “FOOD” to 877877 (Spanish-speakers can also text “COMIDA” to 877-877) and receive a message back with a location closest to where they can get free summer meals. This is a service provided by the USDA No Kid Hungry program.

FOR PARENTS OF 8TH GRADE STUDENTS - STUDENT LEARNING PLAN

Your student has been periodically working on his or her Student Learning Plan (SLP) in Family Connection. Your child’s plan includes:
• results of the strengths and career surveys
• goals
• Resume Builder
• draft course plans for high school
You and your student can view his or her SLP in Family Connection by either logging into your Blackboard Parent View account or by having your student log into his or her Blackboard account and clicking on Family Connection. Once in the Family Connection account, click on the “about me” tab, scroll down and click “portfolio”.
Once you have reviewed your child’s plan, use this link: https://goo.gl/forms/zTfhXDHr2yXqFN1C2 or this Google form to complete the verification form. The completion of this form will serve as your signature. This should be completed by Wednesday, July 11, 2018.  Please note that Blackboard will be unavailable from noon on June 15, 2018 until noon on June 25, 2018.
For more information about your child’s SLP, visit https://www.fcps.edu/academics/graduation-requirements-and-course-planning/student-learning-plan or the SLP website and/or contact your child’s school counselor.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENTS TAKING SUMMER SCHOOL CLASSES OUTSIDE OF FCPS

• Earning Credit in Non-FCPS Courses In the Summer (July-August)
Per Regulation 2408, students enrolled in FCPS are expected to earn standard credits from FCPS programs. The exceptions for courses completed during the summer are outlined below. Since participation in summer programs is elective and there is an associated cost, students are granted more flexibility in accessing non-FCPS programs. Standard credit for advanced academic courses may only be transferred if the advanced academic course is offered through FCPS summer programs.  Middle school students may not take a mathematics course during the summer as their first high school level mathematics course. Students must submit all required forms to their school counselor for prior written approval before enrolling in the course:
• IS-158 Request to Earn High School Credit from Programs Outside of Fairfax County Public Schools
Please contact your child’s school counselor if you have additional questions.

STROLLER AND CAR SEAT DRIVE
To Benefit Children in Honduras

The Virginia Hospital Center Medical Brigade is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the health of communities in Honduras. Join us in supporting their mission by donating a new or used car seat or stroller. They will be shipped in August and distributed during a week-long mission trip in November. Physical therapists use adaptive equipment to transform these donations into makeshift wheelchairs for children in need.

G SUITE FOR EDUCATION SUMMER ACCESS

G Suite for Education is available to your student over the summer, as it has been in the past.  All files created by, or shared with, your student will continue to be available to them.
We encourage you to explore G Suite for Education with your children by logging in together. We suggest having your student log in to his or her FCPS G Suite for Education account at home to show you what they are currently working on.
Your student will use his or her network login credentials to access G Suite for Education. Students in grades 4-12 have the ability to reset their password using the Account Recovery service; however recovery options must be set up in advance. Your student can visit the same link to set up those options.
Summer is also the perfect time to revisit the rules in your household for technology and media use. The FCPS Digital Citizenship website has Device Contracts and Family Media Agreements (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12) that can help you guide family conversations. Translations of these documents are available on the FCPS 24-7 ParentVUE Digital Citizenship curriculum tab. There is also a free online Digital Citizenship course available for parents and their children to work through together.
More information on G Suite for Education can be found on the FCPS Website.
