 Principal's Podium
This past year has been a memorable one for many reasons, including the celebration of Churchill Road’s 60th Anniversary. This final week of school is one of milestones and thank you’s. Just in the past week, kindergarteners celebrated Father’s Day with Donuts for Dads, 1st grade hosted their annual Reading Rodeo, and our third graders celebrated Ancient Civilizations Day. What a great way to end the school year!
On behalf of the CRS staff, we would like to thank our community for your outstanding support. We are fortunate to have such a great partnership; we could not do our job without you. At the risk of neglecting many deserving individuals, I’d like to thank this year’s PTA board comprised of Kristi West, Catherine Paschkewitz, Julie Millar, Elizabeth Marino, Lauren Maimone, Kelly Green Kahn, Jenny Gillespie, Madeline Ellis and Stuart Baumgardner. I would like to specifically thank Christie Stute, this year’s PTA president. She has been an excellent leader. Under Christie’s leadership, the CRS PTA has continued to improve all facets of its programming, balanced the budget, and provided us all with an even greater array of community and afterschool events. And despite the rigors of this volunteer position, Christie has remained a continually positive, enthused presence in our building. I am very thankful for Christie and all of our volunteers.
The Churchill Road teachers and staff hope that everyone in our community has a safe and happy summer,
Don Hutzel

Additional Test Reports Included with Final Report Cards
Please look for additional student reports to be included with your child’s final report card on Friday, June 15. Students in Grades K-2 will have two reports -- the report card and Universal Screener results. Students in Grades 3-6 will receive three reports -- the report card, Universal Screener and SOL results.
All students in Grades K-6 will receive a report from the Fairfax County Public Schools (FPCS) Universal Screener assessments that were completed this year. Students took three assessments for Reading and/or Mathematics over the course of the school year. You will receive results from the three testing windows (Fall, Winter, and Spring). You will find an overall scaled score for each tested subject and a performance level for each subject tested. This report will allow you to see the scaled score so that you may compare your child's progress in Reading or Mathematics from one test window to the next.
Students in Grades 3-6 will also receive a report with the results from the Standards of Learning (SOL) test(s) that were recently completed. Students overall scaled score and performance level will be listed for each SOL test, along with the scaled score for each test reporting category.
Music in the Halls
Last week, Churchill Road students, families and staff were treated to outstanding concerts by band and chorus students. Congratulations to Band Specialist Carina Gutjahr, and Music Specialists Karen Judkins and Kirsten Boyd for all their hard work in preparing students for these concerts.
Summer Tips From Mr. Hutzel
As we head into the summer holiday, I’d like to share a few tips that will help ensure a relaxing, yet productive vacation. I think it’s safe to assume that everyone is looking forward to summer vacation. However, I also know that the hot, sunny days of summer looming before us can present some obstacles. What’s the right balance of scheduled time, down time, rest time, and family time? Here are some tips to help your family make the most of our summer holiday.
Create a flexible routine. Routines are important because children do best with some structure. Scheduled times for meals, play and rest, and planned activities provide clarity for a child. Don’t forget, children should be held accountable for family tasks, too. Making the bed, helping with dishes, and gardening are just a few examples of good activities that can help instill a sense of responsibility and purpose in a child.
Provide a balance. A mixture of scheduled activities and free time is critical for children. Scheduled activities provide structure and focus. It is an opportunity for a child to explore an area of interest and interact with like-minded peers. Free time is also important. It provides an opportunity for children to exercise their imagination, be creative and let off a little steam.
Spend quality family time together. Take advantage of the less rigorous summer pace to do things together. Exercise both the mind and body. A family swim, bike ride or a walk around the neighborhood provides a great opportunity to keep fit and model “wellness”. It’s also an ideal opportunity for family conversations. Mental fitness is important, too. There are a variety of fun and educational games for families to enjoy. Family reading time can also be productive. Finally, put your child’s education to work in “real world” experiences. Friendly letters or postcards to friends and relatives are a great way to practice keyboarding or writing skills and put grammatical and spelling rules to good use.
Keep these tips in mind and both you and your child will have a great, productive holiday. On behalf of the Churchill Road staff, I want to wish you and your family a safe and happy summer vacation. See you in the fall!
Recent Events
First graders ended the year by reading their stories and getting in some square dancing at their annual Reading Rodeo.
Third grade teachers got in the spirit for Ancient Civilizations Day.
A group of 6ths graders prepared to launch their hot air balloon, with a little help from Ms. Robosky and Mr. Craig-Kuhn.
Wellness: The Benefits of Recess
 |
The benefits of recess are many. Recess provides time for students to create their own games, test abilities, mediate conflicts, and to stay fit. Research has repeatedly demonstrated that regular exercise improves students’ mental function and academic performance. In one experiment, researchers manipulated recess times and discovered kids attentiveness decreased the longer they waited for recess and rebounded after they played. As a result of a new Virginia law that goes into effect July 1, Fairfax County Public Schools is providing new guidelines for elementary physical education and recess to accommodate at least 30 minutes of recess per day for elementary school students, beginning with the 2018-19 school year. On Friday, let’s end the 2017-18 school year with a before school bonus recess, also known as Family Fitness Spirit Day. Come to school at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and enjoy 20 minutes playing on the playground, walking on the track, shooting hoops, or joining a game with friends! Students, teachers, and parents are encouraged to join us to enjoy some exercise before school starts. Plus, it is Churchill Spirit Day! We would love to see you and please feel free to invite friends to join us.
Writing Implement Recycling
Please recycle your unwanted pens, markers, crayons, mechanical
pencils, and their caps until the end of school! This includes highlighters and
permanent markers. A collection box is located in the front lobby outside the
library. Thank you!
