Haycock Hello
June 15, 2018
96 students from Haycock
Elementary School were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to
participate this year in the Math Olympiads program. They participated in
a series of five monthly contests of 5 problems each, from November to March,
and weekly practice sessions under the supervision and coaching of Seung
Lee. He taught the children to solve unusual and difficult problems and
to think creatively.
The students responded well and were recognized with
certificates for their participation. 66 of the mathletes won national
awards for excellence within Division E for grades 4-6.
The Gold Pin is awarded to those in at least the 98th percentile
(top 2%). At Haycock Elementary School, Benji Cohen (6thgrade)
and Vayun Malik (6th grade), with a score of 24 out of 25
points, and Jaiden Khemani (6th grade), Taohan Lin (6thgrade),
Teddy Winston (6th grade), Deven Hagen (5th grade),
Hudson Keeler (5th grade), and David Sheng (5th grade),
with a score of 23 out of 25 points, were in this extraordinary group.
The Silver Pin is awarded to those in the 90th to
97th percentiles, including the following students: Rex Allard,
Alexa Barrera, Isabella Cai, Kian Choi, Jeebu Foraida, and John Paul Gonsalves
(in 6th grade), David Lu, Andrew Mu, Phillip Davis, Jaiden
Saran, and So Matusmoto (in 5th grade), Avi Agrawal, Ethan Li,
Oliver Wang, and Daniel Choi (in 4th grade), who all scored 19
to 22 points.
The Embroidered Felt Patch is awarded to those in the top
50% of all the participants, which include 43 other students who represented
Haycock Elementary, in addition to the 23 who were awarded the Gold and Silver
Pins (above). These students scored 12 or above.
Finally, a special mention to the mathletes who performed
admirably in both the official and practice contests - Taohan Lin (6th grade),
Hudson Keeler (5th grade), and Max Lee (4th grade); they scored 55, 50, and 40
out of 61 questions, respectively, over the entire season and provided
inspiration to the others!
The Haycock Elementary School 6th/5th grade
team and 5th/4th grade team were named to the
National Math Olympiad Honor Roll for their scores of 222 and 207,
respectively, which were in the top 10% of all Division E teams
worldwide. The 5th/4th grade team and 4th grade
only team were also named to the National Meritorious Achievement List for
their scores of 207 and 182, respectively; this Certificate of Merit is awarded
to the top 20% of the Division E teams with students only up to 5th grade
and 4th grade, respectively.
Each year the Math Olympiads serves over 100,000 students
on over 5000 teams nationally and about 50,000 students on 1000 teams in more
than 30 other countries. Since 1979, it has provided challenging,
thought-provoking problems that stretch the abilities of students in grades 4
through 8, strengthening their foundation for both assessment tests and more
advanced studies. Our children have responded to the challenge with
eagerness and enthusiasm.
We are proud of you!
A HUGE Thank You to the following parents for volunteering
at Haycock’s Field Day on Friday June 8, 2018.
We could not have pulled off a huge event like this without
the leadership, kindness, patience, and organizational skills to help lead a
station.

G
Suite for Education is available to your student over the summer, as it has
been in the past. All files created by, or shared with, your student will
continue to be available to them.
We encourage you to explore G Suite for
Education with your children by logging in together. We suggest having your
student log in to his or her FCPS G Suite for Education account at home to show
you what they are currently working on.
Your student will use his or her network login credentials to access G Suite
for Education. Students in grades 4-12 have the ability to reset their password
using the Account Recovery service; however recovery options must be set up
in advance. Your student can visit the same link to set up those options.
Summer is also the perfect time to revisit the rules in your household for
technology and media use. The FCPS Digital Citizenship website has Device Contracts and Family Media
Agreements (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12) that can help you guide family conversations. Translations
of these documents are available on the FCPS 24-7 ParentVUE Digital Citizenship
curriculum tab. There is also a free online Digital Citizenship course available for parents
and their children to work through together.
More information on G Suite
for Education can be found on the FCPS Website.
We are now in staffing season. The number of staff
members we are allocated is based upon student enrollment. If you have a
child or know of a family who has a child who will be attending Haycock next
school year and who currently does not attend Haycock, please register your
child now.
If a child has been accepted into the AAP program from another
school and the family has notified the AAP Office of the acceptance, there is
no need to notify Haycock. The AAP Office communicates the list of
students who will be attending Haycock from other schools to Haycock.
Click on the link below to fill out the form for rising
kindergarteners. If your child is turning 5 on or before September 30, 2018,
they are eligible for kindergarten. Partial registration paperwork is accepted.
This form is only requested to be completed if you have a rising
kindergartener attending Haycock next school year.

Right now, we want to make sure our school is fully staffed for
next school year. We also want to make sure we are able to have the
smallest class sizes possible. The sooner we know how many students will
be attending Haycock next school year, the sooner we can advocate for more
staff and then hire more teachers.
You are welcome to use the attached New Student Registration
Checklist in order to help you gather the information to register your child at
Haycock.
The person who is able to answer all of your registration
questions is Rebecca Wright. She is reached via e-mail at: rlwright@fcps.edu or call the school office
at: 703-531-4002
Mr. Donnelly ate lunch each week with Ryan Brown for the past three years. They would sometimes eat lunch with other students as well. They ate lunch in Mr. Donnelly's office, sometimes in Speedy's Courtyard, sometimes in Ms. LaPorte's classroom, sometimes in Cougar Woods, and for the last lunch bunch at Haycock, Ryan and some of his friends ate lunch on the roof of Haycock!

A Haycock tradition is having The Brain Show assembly at the end of the school year. Students are called up into groups and have the opportunity to answer questions regarding a variety of topics from spelling, math, animals, etc. The Brain Show is Haycock's favorite assembly!
A Haycock tradition is to have sixth grade students and staff play volleyball games together. The whole school is welcome to come to the gym to watch the game. It is so much fun!
