Summer Assignments 2018

The following Courses have summer assignments that are due in August 2018: AP Literature, AP Spanish, AP Computer Science, AP World History, AP US History, AP Studio Art, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics.

Summer assignments have been posted on the Woodson website and can be found at this link:  https://woodsonhs.fcps.edu/node/3068.  Students need to use their Google usernames and passwords to access the documents.

G Suite for Education Summer Access

G Suite for Education is available to your student over the summer, as it has been in the past.  All files created by, or shared with, your student will continue to be available to them.

We encourage you to explore G Suite for Education with your children by logging in together. We suggest having your student log in to his or her FCPS G Suite for Education account at home to show you what they are currently working on.

Your student will use his or her network login credentials to access G Suite for Education. Students in grades 4-12 have the ability to reset their password using the Account Recovery service; however recovery options must be set up in advance. Your student can visit the same link to set up those options.

Summer is also the perfect time to revisit the rules in your household for technology and media use. The FCPS Digital Citizenship website has Device Contracts and Family Media Agreements (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12) that can help you guide family conversations. Translations of these documents are available on the FCPS 24-7 ParentVUE Digital Citizenship curriculum tab. There is also a free online Digital Citizenship course available for parents and their children to work through together.

More information on G Suite for Education can be found on the FCPS Website.

Sports Highlight from the PTSO:

WTW Girls Varsity Soccer

The Lady Cavaliers advanced to the state semifinal with a 3 - 2 win over Chantilly in front of a raucous home crowd.  Chloe Dawson had 2 goals in the first half - a blooping ball from 40 yards out and a free kick blast from the left side.  The Chargers fought back with a quick goal at the start of the 2nd half, but Sydney Kulenguski responded with a left footed blast 10 minutes later.  The Chargers responded again 10 minutes later, but the Cavalier defense stood strong the rest of the way for the victory.  In the semi-final match against the Madison Warhawks, the Cavaliers battled to a 1 – 1 tie after regulation, with Allison Kumar scoring the lone goal.  Both teams played hard and had chances in the overtimes, but the score remained tied and the game went to penalty kicks with Madison coming out on top.  The Lady Cavaliers finished the year 15 – 2 – 3.

Career Center Volunteers Needed

Many of our Woodson Career Center (CC) parent volunteers are graduating this year.  CC volunteers have a unique opportunity to learn about the post-secondary research and the application process during their volunteer shifts.

Parents of rising 9th and 10th grade students especially benefit because they will feel more comfortable when it is time for their students to embark on post-secondary research.  To provide consistency, volunteers are asked to commit to a shift for an entire academic year.  Interested parents can sign up at https://tinyurl.com/CC-Volunteer-18-19

Summer Resources

Dear Woodson Families,

During the school year, we are so fortunate that our students have daily access to mental health support and services.  Our school counselors, school psychologists, and school social worker are busy each and every day helping students navigate the social/emotional demands of adolescent life.

While summer is a welcome break for most teens, we know that day-to-day stressors can continue and significant events can happen that make it difficult for our students to cope.  We want to make sure that you are aware of the mental health resources that are available to students and families over the summer. The FCPS website has a wealth of information about mental health and resiliency https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/mental-health-and-resiliency  to include information about emergency resourceshttps://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/mental-health-resources-and-emergency-services-information

Suicide is currently the second leading cause of death for teens, and the statistics are increasing.  Fortunately, this generation of young people is much more informed and open to talking about mental health.  Efforts are also continuously being made to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, so that students feel comfortable seeking help for friends or themselves.

Please find opportunities to talk with your children about their mood and worries, and discuss healthy coping strategies.  Ask them who their trusted adults are, let them know that you are not afraid to talk about difficult topics. Encourage them to reach out for help when needed.

Technology Tips from FCPS

Summer vacation means more free time for students. FCPS wants to help you support your child this summer when they engage in the online world.  If their device is internet-enabled, please consider the following tips and resources:

Educate yourself and your children.

Digital citizenship is learning process
and your child will need sustained support from parents and teachers. Visitbit.ly/fairfaxdigcit for afun and interactive parent-child course that can help your family start conversations about navigating the online world.

Establish rules and expectations.

Have you thought about the rules you want
to establish with your child for setting up accounts and the privacy settings
you expect your child to use?  What are your expectations and how will you
monitor and mediate your child’s online activities? Not sure where to start?
Try these tip sheets, mediaagreements, and device contracts(translations are located on the FCPS 24-7 ParentView tab).

Enjoy Screens.  Not too much. Mostly Together.

Parents should help kids balance screentime. But parents also play a role in sharing the joy of screens with their kids. Parents can model the use of technology for creation, discovery and connection. Parents can help kids understand and interpret the media the use, when we experience it with them.

Help your child monitor and manage their screen time.

It’s easy to spend hours on a device, especially when it's new.  Use these guidelines andstrategies to help your children learn how to monitor and manage their screen time so they will have the ability to find balance when you’re not around.  In the end, remember you are the parent and you make the rules.

Discuss privacy settings and accounts.

Teach your child to protect their personalinformation and model the use of privacy settings.  Discuss why these settings are important and teach them how to make privacy setting choices for every app and service they use.  This resource canhelp you get started.

Give your child action steps.

Discuss potential situations that mayarise before they happen and give your child action steps. Do they know what to they can do if cyber bullied, harassed, or if someone sends them something they don’t want to see? Every difficult situation is an opportunity to help prepare them for life beyond your home. These short parent advice videos, whichcan be filtered by topic and age, can help you identify action steps you can share with your child.

Teach your child to assess risks and make good choices.

Online communication is public andpermanent. Talk with your children regularly and remind them that what they do online can impact future opportunities. Their online reputation can also affect their relationships in the face to face world.
