It is hard to believe this is the last edition of the Puma Press for the 2017-18 school year! Thank you for trusting us with your children each and every day. It was our honor to serve all of our Colin Powell ES families this year.
We wish all of our rising 7th graders the best in middle school. The Powell faculty has watched your children grow up over the years and everyone at Powell is incredibly proud to send such an incredible group of students to middle school. What a milestone!
We wish everyone a wonderful summer vacation and look forward to welcoming back all of our Powell Pumas during Open House/Back-to-School Night on August 22 for grades 4, 5 & 6 and August 23 for kindergarten and grades 1, 2 & 3. Please see the article below for details.
Thanks for a great year! We are thrilled to return to Powell next year as your administrative team!
Your Proud Principals, Mrs. Luerssen, Mrs. Baugh & Ms. Pendergrass
Our school office will be
open throughout the summer from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. We encourage you to
call the office to make sure that the person you wish to see is available. The office will be closed on July 4th – July 6th
for the holiday.
This afternoon, to celebrate our newly promoted 6th graders, we held our First Annual 6th Grade Walk. All of our students and staff lined the hallways to cheer along the 6th graders, we played lively music, and our 6th grade students were able to do one final walk of our halls. The cheers were loud, the tissues were needed, and it was a huge success!
You may visit the link below to view the live stream of this event on our Colin Powell Twitter feed. Once there you also will find all kind of fun pictures and news from today and our entire school year!

On Thursday, June 8th the Centreville pyramid hosted the First Annual Graduation Walk. Each elementary school welcomed back our alumni and cheered them on as they walked the halls. At Powell all of our students lined the hallways and the graduates were led throughout the school by CP, our school mascot. Our students were excited to see the graduates as were their former teachers. We are excited to bring this new tradition to the pyramid!

One of our beloved office staff members, Barbara Braband, is retiring after 15
years of dedicated service. Please see her farewell message below and when you
see her please wish her well in her retirement!
It is with mixed emotions
that I bid everyone at Colin Powell ES a fond farewell. I will be
retiring from Fairfax County Public Schools effective July 1, 2018. I am happy
and proud to say that I have been here since the school opened and cannot begin
to express the joy I have experienced as I’ve gotten to know so many of you
over the years. It has truly been a pleasure to have had the honor of
working with so many wonderful teachers and watching so many students start
their school careers and grow to move on to middle school and high
school. It is always such a treat to visit with the many former students
that come back to visit us.
Thank you, doesn’t begin
to cover it, but it’s a start. I cannot put into words all the feelings
to cover 15 years of fun, laughter and friendship but I hope you all know how
much I appreciate all the love and caring that I have received not to mention
all the wonderful hugs!
Wishing you all the best
as you continue the journey!
Sincerely,
Barbara Braband

Office Assistant
It's hard to believe we are already thinking ahead to August, and
we want to be sure everyone has this NEW exciting event on the calendar.
Colin Powell ES is looking forward to kicking off the 2018-19
school year with an exciting evening event for students and parents on August
22 & 23. We will be hosting a combined Open House &
Back-to-School Night. Students are invited to the playground to enjoy
popsicles, music, and supervised play. While students enjoy reconnecting with
their classmates, parents will have an opportunity to attend grade level and
classroom presentations. Finally, students and parents will go together to
visit their 2018-19 classrooms and meet their teachers.
- August 22,
2018, 5:00 pm -7:30 pm, Grades 4 - 6
- August 23,
2018, 4:00 pm -7:30 pm, Kindergarten - Grade 3
Notification will be sent when specific times for each grade
level are available.
For the 2018-19 school year, students will receive class
assignments in the mail prior to the event. This is an event for students and
parents at Colin Powell ES. If it is necessary to bring non school-aged
siblings, they will need to remain with their parents.
Per Regulation 2102, all medication stored in the school health
room must be picked up by a parent or guardian no later than the student
dismissal time on the last day of school. School Health Aides will send letters
to parents and guardians with instructions for end-of-year medication pickup.
Please refer to the following link for the letter: http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/translations/dss-healthmedical.htm.
Any medications which are not picked up on the last day of school
must be discarded using proper disposal guidelines. The following disposal
guidelines were developed to minimize the introduction of pharmaceuticals into
the water and sewer system: http://fcpsnet/fts/safety-security/publications/seh-40.pdf.
Replace completely filled health room sharps containers using the
on-line ordering system located at the following link (you must be in an FCPS
facility to access this link): http://10.41.64.210/SCPR/SharpsPickupRequest_NEW.aspx.
Partially filled sharps containers may be stored in the health
room until the next school year. Please be aware that medications and unused
Epi-Pens® do not go in sharps containers.
Please continue to collect Box Tops all summer
long! You can bring them in once school has started.
We collected over $800 last year for our wonderful PTA and their
programs! Our next collection date is November 1, 2018.
Check out this exciting, nutritious news! Every elementary student
in Fairfax County will be able to enjoy the Real Food for Kids™ Salad Bar as
part of their school lunch by 2021-- and our school is opening ours during the
2018-19 school year. Opening day is scheduled for December 5, 2018! The
Salad Bar will feature a variety of seasonal fresh fruit and vegetable options
that allow students to build a healthy lunch from a rainbow of choices.
To learn more about the Salad Bar Program, please see this Salad Bar Intro
video for students and this Salad Bar Intro
video for adults. On behalf of Food and Nutrition Services, we are
thrilled to bring the Salad Bar to our students in order to inspire our students
to become lifelong healthy eaters.
