 Glasgow Community -
It is hard to believe, but this week marks the last week of school. The last day will be this Friday, June 15 and students will be released from school at 12:15 (two hours early).
On Friday, the admin team and I chaperoned the 8th grade dance along with several other faculty members. It was a wonderful event. Thanks to the SGA and parent volunteers, the cafeteria was completely transformed with a photo booth, balloon arch, candy table and gold-streamer photo wall. The slideshow was a highlight, and getting to see photos of our 8th grades over the last three years reminded us all just how far they have come during their time with us. It was special to see them dressed up, enjoying each other, and celebrating all their accomplishments over the last three years. You can check out photos from the dance on my twitter handle: @ShawnDeRose.
After five very full weeks, SOL testing concluded last Friday. From proctoring to remediating, every staff member in the building contributed to this significant undertaking. Now that all SOL testing is complete, teachers will be sharing scores privately and one-on-one with students. In addition, SOL score reports will be distributed to students during Panther Time to take home on Tuesday, June 12.
These final days of school are a time for us to celebrate with our students and to help them look forward into the future with yearbooks, and field day activities throughout the week. It is also a great time for staff, students and parents to reflect back on the year and say goodbye as we head into the summer.
Thank you for your support all year long!

HUGE thanks to Marc Parella and Curg Lines for all their help coordinating the event. Thank you to our incredible parent volunteers who worked throughout the day and evening to set up, organize and clean up. There is no way the night would have been successful if it weren’t for the help of these awesome people.
Specifically, thanks to the following teachers: AC Cauthorn, Hannah Kim, Danielle Plourde, Kerry Sparrow, Pete Bianchetta, Tim Stuecheli, Shanice Sanders, Jayme Harris, Shannon Gray, Josh Floyd, Jesse Horton, Kelly Greenshields, and Jennifer Hill, who volunteered as photo booth operators, chaperones and clean-up crew! Two years ago, “Books by the Ocean” received almost 7000 views. Last year, “24K Books” was just as successful. This year they have created another great video encouraging kids to read for the summer. Check out “Wannabeareader” on youtube and share it with the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOBVZjS0eKc&feature=youtu.be. Kiss My Kicks Wins the Race! The girls from Kiss My Kicks, Glasgow’s girls running club competed in their annual 5K race, the Purple Stride, a race that raises awareness for Pancreatic Cancer (a cancer with only a 9% survival rate). Jump Start Program - August 6-7 and 8-9 Glasgow Middle School will be hosting a FREE Jump Start program for rising 6th graders on August 6-7 and 8-9 to prepare them for their transition to middle school. This transition program is designed to both welcome and support 6th graders by assigning them an 8th grade leader as a mentor during this first year. This 8th grade leader is a responsible student who was hand selected from a large pool of applicants and has met the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader on our campus.
Students will get acclimated to their new school through a variety of activities. 8th grade leaders will guide students through a series of team-building activities that give students a chance to meet and interact with their new peers. In addition, students will be led on a guided tour of the building and classrooms, as well as ask other important questions they may have before school begins.
Moreover, Jump Start is designed to alleviate any anxiety and concerns students may have about attending a new school and get them excited about the opportunities that await them at Glasgow Middle School. Students can attend one of the two sessions offered this summer. Session 1 runs August 6th & 7th, and Session 2 runs August 8th & 9th, both sessions will be from 8:00am – 12:00pm.
