June 6th Panther Press

Principal Letter

Dear Spring Hill Parents,

It is hard to believe that school is almost over – only a little over a week left! It has been a terrific school year and I cannot express how grateful I am for your support, the support of the PTO, and your support of the staff at Spring Hill ES.

As you prepare for your summer vacation, I would like to ask you to ensure that your child do two things this summer: 1st – READ READ READ! Please make sure to read to or have your child read at least 20 minutes a night.  Reading truly is fundamental and in my opinion, the more a child reads, the more successful they will be in other subjects. 2nd – FUN FUN FUN!! Let’s remember it is summer, thus it is critical that children get out and play, play, play. The students at SHES have worked very hard this school year and they deserve the reward of a nice long vacation!!

Our website will be updated throughout the summer to reflect events that will occur prior to the start of the school year. Make sure to check it often and if you have any questions feel free to contact the main office at 703-506-3400.

Finally, for those of you who may have missed my email last week, it is with a mix of emotions that I have submitted my resignation as principal of Spring Hill Elementary School. My spouse was fortunate enough to be hired with a wonderful company in Honolulu, Hawaii. As many of you know, I have been dreaming of living in Hawaii for many years now. Although the dream has come true much sooner than I anticipated, I am extremely happy to be moving to a place I love to vacation. I am certainly sad about not seeing SHES students return after a long summer break, but know they are in good hands with the staff and administration of Spring Hill. I know that you will support the new principal, giving him/her a chance to learn the ropes before too many parent meetings are scheduled. Remember that people go into education because they love children and want to see children grow socially, emotionally, and academically. Always assume the best in people, be kind and the most amazing things will happen as a result. Thank you to each one of you for your support, guidance, and appreciation over the last three years.

Have a wonderful Summer!!

William O. Olk, Principal

WordMasters

Two teams representing Spring Hill Elementary School recently earned Highest Honors in the 2017-18 WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. The third grade team scored an impressive 195 points out of a possible 200 in the last of three meets this year, placing first in the nation.  In addition, the sixth grade team scored 193 in the recent meet to place second nationwide.

The third graders also placed first nationally in the overall competition with a cumulative score of 577 points out of a possible 600. The sixth grade team from Spring Hill Elementary School finished the year-long competition in second place with a total of 564 points.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, third graders Henry Ahn, Rachel Ji, Samantha Li, Shveta Sunkar and Audrey Zeigler, fourth grader Eric Xie, and sixth graders Scarlett Adams, Zosia Henryson Gibbs and Sam Isler each earned a perfect score of 20 in the recent meet.  Nationally, only 46 third graders, 111 fourth graders and 34 sixth graders achieved this result.

Other students at Spring Hill Elementary School who achieved outstanding results in the last meet of the year include third graders Mindy Bao, Edward Guo, Kristen Han, Sabrina Kim, Inger Logan, Connelly Roberge, Kate Romani, Artin Safaie, Joshua Sterbutzel and Brianna Wang; fourth graders Justin Ma, Zaib Zahir and Ayla Zhang; fifth grader Kavya Kuttuva; and sixth graders Neel Curtis, Katherine Davis, Finn Fitzgerald, Niki Hoffman, William Liu, Claire Newsome and Tommy Swartz.

The following students also earned individual Highest Honors in the overall competition: third graders Rachel Ji (58 points), Samantha Li (58 points), Audrey Ziegler (57 points), Shveta Sunkar (57 points) and Sabrina Kim (57 points); and sixth graders Tommy Swartz (57 points), Willliam Liu (57 points), Scarlett Adams (57 points), Niki Hoffman (56 points) and Zosia Henryson Gibbs (56 points).  Highest Honors are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division.

The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by their classroom teacher.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.  Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.  Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight.  They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

The WordMasters Challenge™ program is administered by a company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools.  Further information is available at the company’s website:  http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com
