Principal's Corner

A note from Mrs. Edmunds-Heard

Dear Franconia Parents,

I hope all of our Franconia Families had a wonderful Memorial Day holiday.  This is a special day of remembrance for service members in our country’s armed forces who have given their lives in the line of duty.  We are thankful for all they have done for our country!

This week, we are nearing the completion of SOL testing with re-takes and make-ups.  Thank you for all of the support you have provided to our students in the upper grades.

Please note below the changes to next week's lunch information.  There will be a lot of activity in the cafeteria and alternate arrangements have been made to accommodate lunchtime.

As we begin to wind down the school year, there are many activities planned, so check the calendar for those dates.  Please also note any other reminders for end-of-year items.  Thank you for all that you do every day to support us at Franconia!

As we close out our school year, please make plans to have a safe and healthy summer.  We encourage you to enjoy the outdoors together, play sports, and sign up for the public library reading programs.  Many of our learning programs are also available on our website over the summer, so please take advantage of those, too.  Help your student(s) take advantage of every opportunity to grow and learn and gain confidence in themselves.  We truly thank the Franconia Community for all of its support this school year.

Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Terri Edmunds-Heard, Principal

Promotion Ceremonies are Coming Up...

It is an exciting time of year with classroom celebrations, Talent Show, and Promotion Ceremonies all coming up.  Students have many achievements to be proud of and we share in the congratulations to them.

While we recognize that families want to demonstrate congratulations to their students, we have a policy of not allowing balloons into the school for safety reasons.  They present a fire hazard and an obstruction to the heating/cooling vents.

Thank you for adhering to this policy.

Promotion Ceremony Information for Thursday, June 14:

6/14: 6th grade promotion ceremony (9-11am in cafeteria)

6/14: 3rd-5th grade promotion ceremony (12:30-1:30pm in cafeteria)

6/14: K-2nd grade promotion ceremony (2:15-3:15pm in cafeteria)

Medications in the Health Room

All student medications in the health room must be picked up by dismissal time (1:30pm) on the last day of school - Friday, June 15.

Any medications not picked up by that time will be discarded.

Please contact the office with any questions, 703-822-2200.

Summer Book Grab is Here!

The Summer Book Grab is back.  Each year we try to encourage reading over the summer.  Thanks to yearbook sales, we were able to purchase some new books for the students to read.

Students can choose 1 book to keep for the summer - classroom teachers will sign up for a time for their class to go to the "grab" during the school day.  Books don’t need to be returned.   Let’s promote summer reading!

Parent Tips for Raising Strong Readers and Writers: Summer Literacy Challenge!

Brought to you by Reading Rockets, Colorín Colorado, and LD OnLine

For most parents, it’s a challenge to keep kids reading and writing all summer. Suddenly 10 weeks of summer can feel like a very long time! We’ve got a summer literacy challenge for you and your child. It’s modest enough to be manageable –pick just one thing a week to kick start your week’s literacy adventures. But it’s also challenging enough to include a wide range of literacy fun for the whole family.

  1.  Investigate your public library’s summer reading program. Most libraries offer a special program or two during the summer, including puppet shows, book authors and children’s storytellers. Most are free of charge. https://research.fairfaxcounty.gov/summer-reading
  2. Extend your reading circle. We often find ourselves checking out the same types of books over and over again. This week’s challenge is to bring a new type of book into the house. Consider fantasy or science fiction, historical fiction, poetry, biography, or an informational book.
  3. Listen up! Audiobooks are a great way to engage readers and can introduce students to books above their reading level. Many libraries have audiobooks available for check out, and an Internet search can turn up several sites, including Speakaboos.com, that offer free audio books for children.
  4. Make your own audio book! Most phones and computers have simple recording apps on them which are perfect for making homemade audio books! Have your child make up a story, or reread a favorite loved book. The recordings will be priceless!
  5. Go wordless. Wordless picture books are told entirely through their illustrations — they are books without words, or sometimes just a few words. Grab a few wordless books the next time you’re at the library and have fun “reading” different versions of the same story. The language and the conversation will inspire you!
  6.  Visit a museum, online! You’ll be surprised by how much you can explore without leaving your house. One example is the Smithsonian Institution Kids site. It’s complete with offerings from Art to Zoo, for kids and students of all ages.
  7. Pack in a whole adventure! Find FREE themed reading adventure packs that encourage hands-on fun and learning, centered around paired fiction and nonfiction books. Visit Reading Rockets and search Adventure Pack.
  8. Point, shoot, and write. Most families have access to a digital camera, iPad or camera phone. Snap some photos and then encourage your child to write a silly caption for each photo. Not feeling that ambitious? Cut out some pictures from a magazine or the newspaper and have your child write original captions for those.
  9. Mix up the media. Your child has read every Clifford book on the shelf. But has she heard Clifford author Normal Bridwell talk about writing? Explore author interviews from over 100 authors on Reading Rockets Author Interview page. We’ll bet you can’t watch just one.
  10. Write it down. Encourage your child to keep a simple journal or summer diary. Track interesting things like the number of fireflies seen in one minute, the number of mosquito bites on a leg, or the different types of food that can go on the grill. Each entry is a chance to be creative!

Reading Rockets, Colorín Colorado, and LD OnLine are national education services of WETA, the flagship public broadcasting station in Washington, D.C.
