End-of-Year Medication
Disposal Guidelines |
The school
health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in
the clinic must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the
last day of school (Friday, June 15th). Medication left in the health room
after that time will be discarded per FCPS Regulation 2102. It is school policy
that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot
be sent home with your student.
Medication
authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or
online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services A
medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or
over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders
are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed
and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by
your physician. Over-the-counter medication given for headache, muscle pain,
orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps and antibiotic or anti-viral medication
do not need a physician’s signature. More detailed information is available on
the back of the medication authorization form.
Over-the-counter
medication must be in the original container and clearly labeled by the parent
or guardian. All prescription medication, including physician’s samples,
must be labeled by the pharmacist or physician. Please make sure that the label
clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of
the medication, and the time interval for administration.
If your
student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public
Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used
for the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like
a copy of the form(s).
Your
cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her
medication. If you have any questions, please contact our Upper building school
health aide, Nicole Brown, at 571-982-1310 or our Primary building school
health aide, Lori Rossett at 703-781-2710.

Project-Based Learning (PBL)
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is the
act of learning through identifying a real-world problem and developing its
solution. Kids show what they learn as they journey through the unit, not just
at the end. We recently completed our Weather PBL unit, where our driving
question was “How can you, as a meteorologist, observe, analyze, predict, and
forecast the weather?” Currently, students are acting as computer scientists,
coding Ozobot robots to complete various tasks. Ozobots are tiny robots that
can be programmed to follow different colored paths and read color-coded
commands drawn on surfaces. As part of their lessons in the PBL Lab, students
have also continue to focus on the Engineering Design Process, the nature of
Change, the Rules of Brainstorming, technology, collaboration and cooperation
with peers, and how to engage in observation and inquiry.

SAS Closed on Friday, June
8th
SAS
(School Aged Services) will be closed on Friday, June 8. Letters will be
sent home in your student’s’ Thursday Folders which has a detachable
section at the bottom for you to return to your child’s teacher by Wednesday,
June 6, that will inform our staff of your child's transportation method
for this day.
Please do
not put your child on the neighborhood bus. This
will result in overcrowded buses. Therefore, SAS children who normally ride
buses will need to be transported to and from school by car or as a walker.
Student
Placement Parent Input
As we begin planning for the next school year, our initial process
will focus on class groupings for 2018-2019 school year. It is very important
to have balanced classes that reflect the diversity of our student population.
These decisions are made with input from your child’s current teachers,
school-based counselors and administrators.
We value your input as we consider the individual needs of our
students. Please tell us about your child’s learning style, strengths and
needs as a learner. It is also helpful to list characteristics of a
teacher that would best match your student’s needs. If you have multiple
children (i.e. twins), please let us know if they would benefit from being in
the same or different classes.
Please note, requests for specific teachers will not be honored, therefore, we ask that you
do not name a teacher.
Please submit your requests (with child’s name and current
teacher) in writing to our, Student Information Assistant, Marivel Hernandez,
at mvhernandez@fcps.edu by Friday, June 1, 2018.
