Launch of New Halley Website

On Tuesday, May 29th, Halley will launch a newly designed website, which will offer several advantages including:

  • Displaying on mobile devices, an important feature because so many of you are coming to the site through cell phones,
  • Enabling the easy sharing of content between school and Fairfax County Public Schools (for example, emergency alerts about weather closures etc. from the main site will be promptly displayed on the school site),
  • Translating site pages into 75 different languages,
  • Making navigation of sites easier for parents as children progress through the FCPS schools because all sites will feature similar menus, and
  • Featuring accessibility to all users with disabilities (508 compliant).
  •

If you are not able to find the information you need on our home page, you can use any of the following:

  • Search Function, similar to the way you would look for information on Google,
  • Top Menu, which links to main topics including About, Academics, Activities, Resources, and Contact Us, and
  • Full Menu, in the upper left hand corner of the home page, which shows all the items under the main topics.
  •

If you have bookmarked our current website, be sure to update that with our new website address https://halleyes.fcps.edu.

While we have tried to include all of the information that you come to rely on, there may be something that we have forgotten. If that is the case, feel free to contact Jennifer Buchko at jmbuchko@fcps.edu .

Attention Fifth-Grade Parents: Tdap Booster Required for Sixth Grade!

According to Virginia law, all students in the state must receive a booster dose of the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis) vaccine prior to entering sixth grade. You must provide documentation to the school before the end of this school year. This documentation can be a copy of your child’s immunization record or a note from the doctor listing the date of his or her most recent Tdap booster shot. If you have questions, please contact our registrar, Nicole Kendall, at 703-551-5700 or Nicole.Kendall@fcps.edu.

Bumwalye

Help us support our sister school in Uganda, Bumwalye Primary School, by collecting school supplies!

Through Arlington Academy of Hope, Halley Elementary has partnered with an elementary school in rural eastern Uganda, Bumwalye (Boom-wall-yay).  Our students exchange letters with the students at Bumwalye and our principals share lesson plans.  Uganda’s public school system is desperately underfunded, which leaves students in decrepit school buildings with too few desks, classrooms, and supplies to accommodate them. These crowded schools sometimes have one hundred students in one class with only one, underpaid teacher, who may or may not show up to instruct them.

Halley has the opportunity to send a suitcase full of school supplies over to Bumwalye this summer, and basic supplies are most needed.

Pencils, pencils, pencils!

Handheld pencil sharpeners

Please drop donated supplies off at the office in the box marked “Bumwalye”.  Monetary donations can be made online at www.aahuganda.org - be sure to specify the gift is related to Halley & Bumwalye.
