Field Day Friday, June 1

This Friday, June 1st is the Physical Education Department’s Annual Field Day! Our theme this year is Jurassic Park! The students will be doing a variety of dinosaur-related activities outside with their class. Students in grades 4th – 6th will have field day from 9:00 -11:00 a.m. while students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade will have field day from 12:45-2:45 p.m. We would like to remind you to make sure your student has on appropriate attire. With the nature of field day, the students should be wearing athletic clothing and shoes. We will have water refill stations but it would be great if the students could bring their own reusable water bottle so we can have less waste from water cups. We will have one minimal “water” game station but it may be a good idea to send a clean shirt, socks, and shoes so your students are comfortable for the rest of the day. It will be very hot outside! Also, a big thank you to the parent volunteers that will help make this day possible!

Please contact Ms. Gift (magift@fcps.edu) or Mr. Varhol (byvarhol@fcps.edu) if you have any field day related questions.

Giant Food Presents Bonus Check to CRS!

Wellness: Benefits of Music

Music is a consistent element in our lives; many tune into the radio as they get ready in the morning or on their commute, practice an instrument at home, pump up favorite songs while working out, appreciate the soundtrack accompanying a film, or sing in the shower.  Music has a way of improving our mood and our enjoyment of daily activities.  Research has proven that in addition to elevating mood, music reduces anxiety, helps aid memory, improves sleep, enhances visual and verbal skills, reduces pain, and boosts the immune system.

We are fortunate CRS has a vibrant music program from kindergarten through sixth grade. CRS has many upcoming opportunities to embrace the benefits of music: there is the inspiring strings concert this evening at 7:00 p.m.; the strings performance for students on June 1; the toe-tapping band concert for the community on June 4, at 7:00 p.m; the band performance for students on June 5; and the incredible chorus concert for students during the day on June 6 and the performance for the community at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Plus, there are still tickets available for Mary Poppins Jr., which is chock-full of talented CRS students singing catchy tunes!

CRS Chess Team Victorious!

chess

Churchill Road repeated as champions of the very strong Kent Gardens Cup chess tournament, held a week ago. Although the competition was strong and the matches were close, we prevailed.  The team, pictured above, were (from l-r) Samuel M., Raka A., Lang X., Colin W., Pierce W., Samuel L., James W. (holding trophy), David C., Justin Y., Jayden L., Justin L., and Abigail L.

PE Bike Safety Unit and New Bike Racks

bikes

The Physical Education Department would like to thank all of our school staff, parents, and students for their support during our new bike safety unit that we held the last two weeks for 3rd-6th graders. It was wonderful to see so many students bring their own bikes to school to practice. We encourage the students to continue riding their bikes to school. Our school also recently purchased new bike racks installed by a local boy scout troop (see below)! Please ask your students what they learned during our unit and continue to review during the summer. They should be able to tell you how to appropriately fit a helmet, how to conduct an ABC Quick Check before riding (air, brakes, cranks, chains & cogs), and the importance of appropriate spacing between bikes and other obstacles. Don’t forget, a helmet is a must!

Check out the new bike racks by the Kiss and Ride parking lot.

On Saturday, May 19th, an Eagle Scout and Churchill Road alum, along with troop members and parents, installed six new bike racks by the Kiss and Ride parking lot.  We hope many of our students will take advantage of these the new bike racks when they ride to school.

Cheer Winners of the Week

Congratulations to our Churchill Cheer winners for the week of May 21. Cheers are given to students who follow the four R’s. Churchill Cheer winners are: Siheon Lee (K); Jerry Zhang (1st); Cormac Stephens (2nd); Hugh Stuckless (3rd); and Joseph Bonavolanta (4th). Our good citizenship winners are Greta Uhlmann (5th) and Colin Walter (6th).  Remember, at CRS we follow the four R’s. We respect ourselves, we respect others, we respect property, we respect the Earth, and we are responsible.

aw

Thank you to the 101 parent volunteers who led our Artist Workshop sessions this year – all 165 lessons! Every class participated in 5 of these fun, creative and hands on workshops throughout the school year, learning more about their curriculum through fine art examples. This program wouldn't be possible without your support! Special thanks to our coordinators, Meredith Blankenstein and Cynthia Warshaw.

As outlined by FCPS Regulation 1367.2, school principals shall offer options to nonprofit organizations that want to make their materials available to students and parents. At Churchill Road, non-profit organizations will be permitted to send home flyers in the take home folder 4 times during the year. The dates for the 2017-2018 school year are the weeks of October 2, December 4, March 5 and May 14. These fliers must be related to the school’s educational mission and be age-appropriate. Community organizations must submit their materials in advance to the school’s principal and must include the disclaimer “These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this School.” Once approved, the organization will be required to make the copies necessary for distribution. Any questions can be directed to Kim Moran, Churchill Road's Public Relations Liaison.
