Glasgow Community Gazette - Memorial Day Edition

Glasgow Community -

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with people and activities you love as we honor those who have died while serving our country. I drove back to Ohio on Thursday night to visit my sister and ride Cedar Point’s new roller coaster, Steel Vengeance with my daughters, Claire and Regan. Check out the ride on Cedar Point’s website. https://www.cedarpoint.com/explore/steel-vengeance.

As we approach the final weeks of the school year, I want to draw your attention to the end of the year schedule and calendar below. As many of you know, the end of the year brings many exciting events and activities (Career Day, Awards Ceremonies, Field Days). It is important for me to remind all families that every year a few students make poor decisions that result in the loss of their end of the year activities. I am confident all students will make good decisions as we head towards the end of the year, but I also want to thank you in advance for having a conversation about choices and consequences at home.

This week, we will be meeting with all 8th grade students to promote the 8th grade dance and review expectations to ensure the event is huge success. The dance is June 8 from 6:30-8:30pm. You can view the presentation to students here: https://bit.ly/2kt7lbW.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Shawn P. DeRose
Principal

Rising 9th Grade Activities Fair - June 6
The transition from middle school to high school is an important time in a student’s education. A successful transition is often the key to success in ninth grade and beyond. The staff of Stuart/Justice High School is excited to be a part of this special time for your student and we are here to help facilitate a smooth transition.

On Wednesday, June 6, 2018 Stuart High School will host a Rising 9th Grade Activities Fair open to all parents and students interested in finding out more about our clubs, activities and athletic programs. The night will begin in the auditorium at 6:30 with a welcome message from Principal Penny Gros and Director of Student Activities Brian Garvey.  Parents and students will then have an opportunity to visit the clubs, sports and activities of their choice in the main gym. The event will conclude at 8:00pm.

8th Grade Dance - June 8 from 6:30-8:30PM
The Glasgow Middle School Student Government Association (SGA) and PTA are excited to sponsor our annual 8th Grade Dance! This year, the 8th Grade Dance will be held on Friday, June 8 from 6:30-8:30PM in the Glasgow cafeteria.

Students can purchase tickets for $5 during lunch on Friday, June 1 and Monday, June 4. The ticket includes admission (DJ, photo booth, 8th grade slideshow), dinner from Chick-fil-A, a dessert table, snack, sodas, a glow stick and more!  No tickets will be sold after this date or at the door.

Please note that the 8th Grade Dance is semi-formal. It is not a formal and should NOT be treated like prom. Students must be in attendance for the entire school day in order to attend the dance.  All students must be transported to the dance by a parent or guardian and must be picked up by 8:30PM. Carpooling is acceptable. Students arriving in limos will be turned back home. This event is for Glasgow 8th graders only.  No guests are permitted.

We look forward to celebrating this special event with our 8th grade class. It is always a very fun, festive and sentimental evening as we celebrate with students we have seen grow so much over their time at Glasgow! We hope to see your student there!

If students laze away the days of summer without using their minds, they can lose up to a month of learning—especially in reading and math. Stem the summer slide and keep your child engaged with these fun, brain-friendly activities. Link: https://www.naesp.org/sites/default/files/RtP_SummerLearning_1.pdf

Jump Start Program - August 6-7 and 8-9
Glasgow Middle School will be hosting a FREE Jump Start program for rising 6th graders on August 6-7 and 8-9 to prepare them for their transition to middle school. This transition program is designed to both welcome and support 6th graders by assigning them an 8th grade leader as a mentor during this first year. This 8th grade leader is a responsible student who was hand selected from a large pool of applicants and has met the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader on our campus.

Students will get acclimated to their new school through a variety of activities. 8th grade leaders will guide students through a series of team-building activities that give students a chance to meet and interact with their new peers. In addition, students will be led on a guided tour of the building and classrooms, as well as ask other important questions they may have before school begins.

Moreover, Jump Start is designed to alleviate any anxiety and concerns students may have about attending a new school and get them excited about the opportunities that await them at Glasgow Middle School. Students can attend one of the two sessions offered this summer. Session 1 runs August 6th & 7th, and Session 2 runs August 8th & 9th, both sessions will be from 8:00am – 12:00pm.
